SOLVED!

Originally I used ##### and ##### to install retail 10.6.3 and then upgraded to 10.6.5. I decided to use the nawcom USB stick install method which integrated 10.6.3. Everything worked except the graphics card nVidia 9600 GT which worked under the ##### method. I tried the 10.6.5 upgrade and got KPs, once a double panic. I used the same working DSDT.aml which I got from the Tonymac DSDT database and did not use Sleep_Enabler.kext. Is the KP caused by no graphics kext installed?

Also I thought a new EFI partition would be created... it looks to me like both SL installations are using the same EFI partion. I tried ##### to install the 9600 kext on the nawcom install, just as I did with with tonymac method but that also resulted in a KP. My goal was to have a second SL so that I could test things while keeping my original and working install safe. Oh, and I downloaded the Nvidia kext for Geforce cards and it quit with an error message: this OS isn't supported. I've NVenabler Yes and also No without effect.

This worked:

Booted with safe mode -x, and it loaded. Then tried again with -v, verbose, and it stopped at voodoo something (2.72)

which I deleted and it worked ok. voodoo was probably leftover from the nawcom install. ##### 2.6 worked.
