Hi all,

First post - and I'm really trying not to be a noob here. I work in tech support for a large university, and I am plenty familiar with real Macs (I have a late 2006 MacBook). Let me give you my system specs, for starters.

Mobo: Asus P5E-VM HDMI (G35 chipset)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (stock clocks)

RAM: 4x1 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800

GPU: MSI Radeon HD 4890 (stock clocks)

PSU: Corsair VX450

HDD: Seagate 160 GB HDD SATA (only hard drive plugged in)

DVD: LG DVD-ROM SATA (only DVD drive plugged in)

Case: Cooler Master Elite 341

O/S: Retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD (purchased at campus computer store)

I'm carefully following the instructions listed here in the "General Tips," using the most recent ##### DVD and I have ##### stashed on my USB stick.

1. Purchase and use a genuine Mac OS X Snow Leopard Retail Installation DVD (yup)

2. Use a SATA CD/DVD drive and SATA hard drive (yup)

3. Update your motherboard to the latest BIOS version available (yup)

4. Physically remove any extra RAM sticks so that your system has a total of no more than 4GB of RAM (4x1 GB Corsair DDR2-800, yup)

5. Use only 1 graphics card in the 1st PCIe slot with 1 monitor plugged in. (yup, MSI Radeon HD 4890)

6. Remove any USB peripherals besides keyboard and mouse. (yup, the "tenkeyless" Apple keyboard and a Logitech G5)

7. Remove any hard drives besides the blank drive being used for OS X (yup)

8. Remove any PCI cards besides graphics- they may not be Mac compatible (none attached)

9. Set BIOS to Optimized Defaults, then set SATA to AHCI mode and HPET to 64-bit (SATA-->AHCI, no HPET available)

10. Set Boot Priority to boot from CD/DVD drive, then hard drive (yup)

11. If using a Gigabyte board, use Port 0 and 1 of the Blue Intel SATA ports (N/A, I have an Asus)

12. Intel Only. We do not support AMD. (yup)

13. ##### + ##### is known to work with the P55, X58 P35 and H55 chipsets and will most likely work with all Core 2 compatible boards. (my board runs a G35, which is a P35 with included (and disabled) integrated video card).

14. If using a large > 1 TB Hard Drive, your system partition needs to be 1 TB or less. (160GB, not the problem)

15. Onboard Intel GMA HD graphics by themselves are currently unsupported. There are no available drivers- you'll need to use a discreet card. (using Radeon HD 4890)

16. ##### should be run from the boot drive. Copy to Applications folder or Desktop. (can't do this, since I can't even get into the installer).

1) With the settings above enabled, tried following the basic instructions here (http://lifehacker.com/#!5672051/how-to- ... easy-steps). I get through the ##### loader, hit F5, boot into the DVD, and after about five minutes of sitting there, I get to a gray Apple logo with a circular "no entry" symbol above it.

2) With the settings above enabled, I then booted into safe and verbose mode ("-x -v") and I hang after about ten minutes with a bootctl problem relating to "ACPI."

3) I tried using some other EFI emulation tools, like EmpireEFI and nawcom's ModCD. Neither worked. Nawcom was the most promising - I was able to at least get to the OS X installer, but I can't actually boot into the installed version of OS X on my drive.

4) Finally, just wiped the HDD out using GParted, and am waiting to hear from you guys on what I should try next.

Thanks very much for reading through this wall of text, and I would REALLY appreciate any replies. I'm trying to do some fairly hefty video encoding and I think it would really really help to have a quad core chip do this as opposed to the wimpy dual core in my MacBook.

Thanks again!

penguins

Hi penguins,

What do you mean by this? Did you get through the installation process or not?

I was able to at least get to the OS X installer, but I can't actually boot into the installed version of OS X on my drive.

If you finished the installation, then you just need to boot to the correct HD.

I used the ##### ##### method myself which is fairly well perfected.

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ibo...ac-os-x-on.html

Let's use this guide since lifehacker "borrowed" it.

This sounds pretty drastic, like some major player is not right. Did you check the HCL for your cpu, video card and mobo? All I can think of now is to try a legacy version of #####.

STEP 2: INSTALL MAC OS X

In order to boot the Mac OS X Retail DVD, you'll need to download and burn #####. For desktops and laptops using unsupported Intel CPUs and graphics, a legacy version of ##### can be downloaded here.

8. When you get to the installation screen, open Utilities/Disk Utility. NOTE: If you can't get to the installation screen, retry the process, but type -x at the screen above. This will enter Mac OS X Safe Mode, which will allow you to proceed.

It's 4:30 am so will drop in later. I did take time to see that your mobo is supported.

Your gpu had some problems but that was in 2009. You need to find an example where that mobo worked with that cpu.

So this was with nawcom's modCD. I did get into OS X installer, and I did format the hard drive to HFS+ as well. The installation completed successfully (with the big green check mark), but I can't boot into the hard drive with OS X installed on it using the bootCD (you have to boot to the CD first, right? You need EFI emulation to boot your OS X install...). It just constantly hangs at "Still waiting for root device," even in safe mode. At other times it will hang with bootctl errors again.

Let me know your thoughts. At this point I'm half-tempted to grab iAtkos or an old Kalyway disc and boot/install using that, then upgrade to SL once I have a working Leopard install. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I will try again with the legacy version of ##### and booting into safe mode later tonight and update you guys on progress. Either that or I'll just use the Kalyway DVD that I'm installing right now.

There is a pretty recent version of #####, 3.2.0 with the newest Chameleon.

I've had an installation fail because of some hardware problem (memory) but since you were able to finish an installation that's not so likely; I always suspect a video driver problem first.

This worked with the Kalway 10.5.2; I'm not sure how much it matters ICH9 to ICH9R

I didn't check to see if later versions of Kalway worked in newer HCLs. later ...

I found a guide at insanelymac for your mobo and Leopard, doesn't work with raid.

THANK YOU for your help. Unfortunately, I think we might have crossed wires at some point - just to be clear...

The problem is that I can't get the ##### method to work. I can install (but not boot into) OS X using nawcom's modCD but NOT #####. I torrented Kalyway overnight (as rec'd by the HCL 10.5.2) and will try that, but would obviously prefer to use my retail DVD if possible, if only for ease of updates/maintenance.

The game is afoot! I started wondering about the error message and did some research:

"2) With the settings above enabled, I then booted into safe and verbose mode ("-x -v")

and I hang after about ten minutes with a bootctl problem relating to "ACPI."

So I found a webpage that fits the bill.

http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=101

"Still Waiting for Root Device is an all-too common issue among OSx86 installs.

It affects both dvd drives (ie "Still Waiting for Root Device" when you try to boot up

an osx86/retail Mac OS X dvd) and hard drives (after you've successfully installed with

an osx86/retail Mac OS X dvd).

This problem occurs when your southbridge chipset does not have a working kext or "driver" to make it work properly.

Common, well-supported chipsets which practically never see this problem as they are natively supported by Apple are:

ICH6, ICH7, ICH8, nVIdia nForce MCP79, and most recently ICH10." [iCH9 is conspicuously absent.]

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe you didn't get this error message but symptoms match up including ICH9 as problematic.

"Most prepatched dvds (iATKOS, kalyway, JaS, XxX, etc) have some of these kexts available for installation already, but to use a retail installation, the preboot media must be supplied with the proper kext/s required by the OS."

That explains why you got further with modCD, it had the needed kexts that the retail dvd didn't. MaLd0n recommends Hackboot. In my reading I found two other things that may not be enabled by default in your Bios that were recommended.

Suspend Mode: S3 Only

ACPI 2.0 Support: Enabled [not ACPI APIC]

Ah, unfortunately it looks as though I won't be able to proceed then. Without ICH9R support my motherboard just won't work for OSX86. When I do eventually upgrade my computer, though, I will be sure to select compatible hardware. Until then, I can always hook up my MacBook to my big monitor.

Thanks for all your help Mulcyber!

I'm sorry it didn't work out, I bet you put a lot of effort into it. I had hopes for it because the P5e with ICH9R was listed as working at http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.6.0

He used the blackosx install guide which explains how to put the retail OS X on a 8mb usb stick +Chameleon. I was thinking that the device name and id could be added to the file on disk before the reboot after Install Successful. Or maybe the usb stick could contain an already edited kext (or .plist?). But that is supposition, they don't go into detail about how they do it.

The next webpage has some detail about how to make a Chameleon preboot image.

http://solitudo.net/blah/posts/Create_preb...ernelextensions

http://netkas.org/?p=80

I took legacy kexts made by cyclonefr for ich9, added ich10 support and sharing them.

Just put it to /Extra/Extensions.mkext and u can forget about orange icons with sata and ich9/10 problems.(like having to add device id or etc). http://www.mediafire.com/?zytdghpebyd
