u1m2
http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/features/m...price/index.php this is the link if you want to check it out My reaction: Wow. I mean, seriously: Wow. The Mac Pro is more than $1,000 less expensive? That’s not pocket change. In fact, the difference in price here is nearly a reverse of late-90’s Dell vs. Mac pricing. (If you’re skeptical of this comparison, even The Inquirer—far from a Mac-sympathetic publication—came to a similar conclusion: “Apple thrashes Dell on Mac Pro pricing.” And that was using a Precision 490, a less expensive Dell machine that isn’t really comparable to the Mac Pro in terms of expandability. Another comparison, with a similar result, can be found at systemshootouts.org.) They are supposedly configuring two systems that will be used for Pro work. Dell comes with a 19'' display and a Quadro FX3450 which is a 1000 bucks on average compared to 120-130 of the 7300GT. The display costs 250 bucks and the smart a$$ author who wrote this comparison chose not to add the price of the LCD display to the Apple Mac Pro's and came up with a price difference of 1350 bucks in the comparative chart. Only later in the comparison he wrote On the Dell side, the most obvious difference is that you get a 19-inch LCD display—a $250 value when purchased separately and he wrote this on some paragraph down at the bottom most readers won't bother to read after they have seen the chart. And he thinks this is the most obvious difference but not the Quadro graphics. Quadro 3450 rapes two geforce 7900GTX's SLI'd in apps such as Maya and 3DS Max let alone a puny 7300GT. How is this a fair comparison of two systems that are going to be used in Professional use as the author wrote... With the Mac Pro, such concerns go out the window: The Mac Pro is aimed squarely at pros—people who need workstations with power and expandability ??? Just read this I’m sure some Dell fans will also quibble with my choice of video cards. It’s true that less expensive cards available from Dell will be adequate for many users, and some of those will even offer comparable performance to the Mac Pro’s Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT. However, the Quadro FX 3450 was the least expensive video card from Dell that offers both dual-link and single-link ports, allowing you to drive a 30-inch Apple or Dell display along with another smaller display—something the Mac Pro’s stock card can also do, and a task that’s more popular than you might think among professional users. If Macworld ever intended to make a fair comparison why didn't they just upped the graphics card on the mac to a Quadro FX4500 (which is available for Macs too) and Dell's as well and then show the price difference. One final rant : Dell has on-site service and the author writes The Dell’s “Economy” on-site service plan may also offer some advantages, although that isn’t clear. What is not clear about that?? If when you are doing some important editing or whatsoever and in the middle of the night your computer decides to shut itself down and not reboot, be it memory, processors or motherboard I think you would be glad that you have opted for an onsite service because the chances are that as a ''professional'' you wouldn't be able to figure your problem on your own. Isn't it better to be able to call and have someone come over to fix your PC because your time is serious money since you are making money off that computer. I hope Dell can somehow sue this guy for being the idiot he is. I think the Mac Pro is a great Computer and it costs about the same as a Dell -as I showed- and I would pick one over the Dell because it looks the part, runs OS X and comes with ton of apps but these are the sort of reviews I can't stand hence the reason behind my anger. There is misinformation everywhere, they claim to be fair but it stinks of bias, worse of all, they tend to support their bias by misinforming people. Truly unacceptable. I can already see someone typing 'what did you expect bozo, its 'MAC' world for gods sake'...
