I have installed 10.6 on my pc using lifehackers "no hacking" guide using EP45UD3P installer. I don't have a sata dvd drive yet. I've ordered one from newegg today.

The problem is this:

I can't get sound, or upgrade. I have tried using software update to update to 10.6.5 and when I reboot I get no video, but no KP. I've tried to install kext for audio and immediately get the gray screen "please reboot"

While, I can use it as-is with no sound, I would like to have sound. I have tried tonymac's install guide and kept getting "still waiting for root device even with -v -x. I think it's b\c I don't have a sata dvd drive.

Any help is appreciated.

TIA ,

Justin

first thing are you saying you can boot but have no sound and then also you cannot upgrade.

or is it that u cannot boot at all after the install.

1. if you can boot check you board to see what audio chip your board uses. then if your using a dsdt file you need the correct applehda.kext to match your board. eg.. alc 888, 883, 888s, and so on. refer to manual or motherboard box.

remember if you upgrade it will break your sound card again so back the sound kext up some where, for after the upgrade process to reload.

key note drag and drop of sound driver do not work, use kext helper b7..

2. on the other hand if you can't boot that because your boot loader is not funtional. and need to be reloaded

check out ##### 3.1 it may work for your motherboard, to fixed both issues.

i recommend the combo update if you plan to upgrade, however before you restart, fix the audio file and in some case the usb. the usb tend to break on some mother board as i found out the hard way

At this point I can boot. I am running 10.6.1. The last time I ran the combo update 10.6.5 and then ran #####, when I rebooted all I got was a blue screen. It didn't really look like a KP/BSOD...it was just blue, so I'm hesitant about upgrading further. Currently, I have office, iwork, and some other apps installed. iTunes is buggy and I have to boot to my flash drive first. I could run EP45UD3P and install it to the HD. Still I'd like to upgrade with out breaking it. I just dont want to have to reinstall if I get a KP.

Thanks
