Yay! It works (10.5.2) ... now can I upgrade?

I first tried installing OSx on one of my computers probably about 2 years ago and have come back and poked around at it a few times since. But this weekend I sat down and was determined to do the job. IAtkos 10.6.3 wouldn't install to my disapointment. But I dug up an old Kalyway 10.5.2 cd I had kicking around and sure enough got everything up and running with a vanilla kernel. Sleep, sound, networking, video... can't complain. Well.. except for the lack of support for newer Safari browsers and iLife. So here I am, looking for guidance.

I understand the Vanilla Kernel should allow me to use Apple updates, however, when I try and do the software update, it makes it about 1/3 into the install and tells me the computer needs to be rebooted. And then it won't boot, giving me the same pop-up window a few seconds into the boot process that my system needs to be shut-down.

Can somebody point me to a good guide on upgrading Kalyway with a vanilla kernel? Is there another 10.6 I may want to try installing? Or should I just be happy to have 10.5.2 and accept my station in the world?

Do you have a AMD or Intel CPU? I personally have AMD and I use a boot cd in order to boot after updating the OS. ;)

It's an intel core 2 duo. It looks like it 'should' work. I was just wondering if I was missing an important step before running the upgrade.
