bob reed
Hello I am a new user here. I have been running my Hackinosh for about 8 months with no issues it was 10.6.3. Was very happy with it and had no intentions of updating. A friend of mine has been using the system for some video editing and updated it to 10.6.6. The system still runs but there is no USB. What this means is I have no keyboard or mouse. All my data is safe as I store all the work on firewire drives but I really don't want to go through a complete install to get all the software back on. I have spent a number of hours looking for a solution with no luck maybe I am not typing in the right search criteria. So my question is simple, is there a way to get USB back or should I just go and start a new install? dothacker
There's a thread in here that if you update past 10.6.4, you will lose your usb, so back up IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorage.kext, install the update, do not restart, re-apply the backed-up kext and then restart... but obviously, you just jumped the gun and just updated the the OSX. this happened A LOT of times already, and I just re-install it back to 10.6.3 and then update it to 10.6.4. Backup the said kexts above and apply 10.6.5, install the kexts back and then restart... then apply 10.6.6 and re-install the kexts again and then restart... Unless you have another mac or if ur PC has a PS/2 port that you can connect your keyboard in, then i guess it's re-installing OSX for you. Good luck and have fun. bob reed
Thanks for that dothacker. I came to that conclusion a while ago and started the reinstall. I do have more Macs and PCs...I will see if I can do it with your instructions but before I put all the software back on. bob reed
Is there anything I need to delete after moving the kext files back into the proper place? Or point me to that thread you where talking about above. Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/244042-no-usb/#findComment-1625317 Share on other sites
dothacker
nope. just drop it in your extensions folder. if it asks u to overwrite, overwrite. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=241902 that is the 10.6.6 release forum. a lot of people had problems after installing it, and we posted our solutions in there too... including the backing up your old IOUSBFAMILY.KEXT and IOUSBMASSSTORAGE.KEXT. Didn't work but thanks for the help. I went back to 10.6.4. Before I updated to 10.6.5 I backed up the 2 kext files you mentioned and then did the update. Before restart I moved the 2 backed up files back in to their folder and yes it asked to over write. I allowed it to. Restarted and I got a little icon with a hash over the Apple logo. Restart and did the -x -v and it did reboot, but no USB. No idea what I am doing wrong as I am sure it is me... TreeFriend
Instead of messing around with kexts, why not create a DSDT for your motherboard? Search for "minimal DSDT edits" in Google. MacMan's tutorial is pretty easy. You can get your DSDT using a Linux live CD such as Ubuntu or Kubuntu. It is under /proc/acpi/dsdt. Upload that file here and maybe somebody can get make you a quick-and-dirty DSDT.aml to get your USB ports working. Once you have your DSDT.aml file, you tell Chameleon to load it using the DSDT= flag. You can also download TonyMac's ##### to see if you can boot your system with that. bob reed
did you repair permissions before you restarted? Well no, you didn't mention that. But what is with that little icon with the hash through it? Does that mean it does not see the HD? I have it reinstalled, ready for round 24, 25, 26 LOL now I am just going to beat beat it to beat it!
