If you ahve experienced problems with VLC not playing just download a plugin called PERAIN:

I can now play a lot more video filetypes in Quicktime including FLV!

VLC not playing videos is a sign that you don't have the right video drivers (kexts) installed.

 

To fix this, you need to identify the kind of video card you have and the version of OSX you're running. With those two bits of information you should be able to find the right kext on this forum.
