boboz
Fresh Install Snow_Leopard_10.6.1-10.6.2_SSE2_SSE3_Intel_AMD_by_Hazard on vmware7 on a Pentium 4 machine. Can't get tools installing (hangs end) but otherwise ok. Only it is very very slow. Install took like 4 hours so leaning towards a disk access problem. Ideas? Options used: 10.6.2, legacy kernel, graphic enabler, NVEnabler, NVinject Intel Pentium 4 530, 3000 MHz (15 x 200) Intel Alderwood i925X 2048 MB (DDR2-533 ECC DDR2 SDRAM) NVIDIA Quadro PCI-E Series (Omega 2.169.21) (64 MB) Analog Devices AD1888/AD1980 @ Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller [b-1] Intel® 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F Intel® 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller SCSI/RAID Host Controller Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller Thanks Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/241867-performance-issue-with-sl-on-vmware7-pentium-4/ Share on other sites
boboz
Tools took 3 hours to complete so any performance tips would be great. Gringo Vermelho
Performance is bad because your P4 530 does not support hardware virtualization aka vanderpool or vt-x. For this, you'll need to find a Pentium D from the 9x0 series, or a 6x2 series Pentium 4. graphic enabler, NVEnabler, NVinject You don't need the injectors, they are useless on a virtual machine! VMWare uses its own "emulated" video card, the guest OS does not know that you have an nvidia card. boboz
Ok, thanks. How come VT is som important for OS X? So by replacing my lousy Pentium 4 with next in line processor supporting VT will dramatically improve performance? Gringo Vermelho
Ok, thanks. How come VT is som important for OS X? It's important for virtualization, which is what you're doing. Wait a minute, are you saying that your virtual machine performance is fine when you're running Windows in a virtual machine? It's only slow when running OS X? Anyway, this article (first hit on a google search for "VMWare 7 OS X") confirms what I'm saying: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-install-o...dows-7-9140301/ So by replacing my lousy Pentium 4 with next in line processor supporting VT will dramatically improve performance? Yes, it should. I'm not sure if this has to be supported by your motherboard as well or if this is a CPU feature only. Check the pages in your motherboard manual that explains the BIOS settings, look for a setting that toggles Intel VT-x or Vanderpool. Also check your motherboard manufacturer's website, there's a page about your motherboard where you can find a list of CPUs that can do virtualization. Make sure it will work with the CPU models that has VT-x. You will not see this setting in your BIOS because your CPU doesn't support it. At least, this setting did not appear in my motherboard BIOS until I upgraded to a Core 2 Duo E8500. boboz
Yea, performance is no problem att all running other OS's. Just set up ubuntu 10.10 and also used a lot of other OS's with absolutely no problem at all. So that's why I am asking. It's veeeery slow. Like opening system preferences takes almost 10 seconds. I know many guides say's you need VT to install. But why does OS X need it (apparently works with the right bootloader)? My impression is that it's just a way for apple to control what processors are used. No fundamental function, or?
