Hi,

I've been googling around between tonymac, insanelymac and kexts.com trying to find the right combination of bootloader/DSDT to get this combination to boot.

So far I can get it to either panic, restart, or go to a black screen after the verbose logging.

I attempted to use the DSDT from the library on tonymac for the FC bios and recently tried distros of Chameleon RC5.

Does anyone have this combo working and if so, after 10.6.4 is there a correct way to do it vs. some of the posts I've read on modified Kernels? I setup 10.6.5 fresh install with #####, then attempted some of my own manual kexts and bootloaders after including a debug one I found on Tonymac. That didn't work either.

Last logs before it either restarts, panics or goes to a black screen

12GB OCZ Reaper

Temp 9800GTX+ until this is stable, then my Apple ATI 5770 is going in it.

Thanks,

Mark

Update:

I've additionally tried the following:

1. Chameleon RC4 - boots to black screen

2. Swapped Video Card from PCI 1 to 2, no change

3. Chameleon Pre Release RC5 tonymac - boots to black screen, but I've also seen a double panic and the messages go by to fast to determine exactly what it was but I caught a "AppleACPI something" as it went by.

4. ##### with no DSDT. Result is a restart.

5. AnVAL5 boot loader - boots to black screen

6. Attempted NVEnabler or Graphics Enabled Yes for video, but the spot where it stops above is typically right before it traces out the CPU, FakeSMC, etc ... messages.

I took a known working version (backup) of my 10.6.5 from my UD5 board with a i7 920.

Same results booting to a black screen or getting a double panic.

You can try this dsdt make sure pci 1 is selected in bios for video. http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file...GVsIDk4MC56aXA=

Thanks I may try this in a bit. I got some feedback from another fellow UD7 guy with the 980X and I'm using Chameleon RC5 r693 w/ a highend met 980 package from kexts.com. With 10.6.4 I got it to boot. When I attempted to do a few updates like Itunes, Java, Airport and then rebooted I had no network. I restarted and did a -v and it went to a black screen. I attempted a -v and a -f and it just restarted there after. I'm trying again now.

Update: did a fresh 10.6 with a update to 10.6.4 applied RC5 and this high met 980 Extra folder and it won't boot. Its doing the same thing. Starting to think this is highly unreliable.

Update 2: Did another 10.6 - > 10.6.4 and can't get lighting to strike twice again. No idea why it booted that one time but haven't been able to duplicate it since. For good measure I put my UD5 Extra folder on it and booted it up on that and it worked so something isn't happy (bootloader or DSDT).

The times I can manage to get a panic (most the time just a black screen) I get:

photo2.jpg

Right now using the above just with a -v right before it goes to a black screen or restarts I see:

photo2.PNG

If I don't do a -v or a -f I see the Apple Screen with no spinning wheel at the bottom and nothing happens. However sometimes I do see a double kernel panic.

If you have windows use this http://www.aida64.com/downloads install then on the bottom right click the 64 icon then select acip tool and save dsdt rename acpi_dsdt.bin to acpi_dsdt.aml then run the auto dsdt patcher http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=235523 then put in extra folder. That will be the best dsdt .

I jumped into the bios because I have my i7 920 OC'd to 4.2Ghz (UD5) and I really got in and set all the voltages/timings etc ... Turns out the bios had the mem timings at 7-7-7-24 and it was suppose to be 7-8-8-24. DRAM Voltage was 1.5 and that was suppose to be 1.64V.

I also OC'd the thing to 4.128Ghz (UD7) conservatively and now that damn thing boots. I'm cloning off my USB drive now to a internal drive so I can keep testing.

Send update shortly.

I dont know if your UD7 is rev 1 or rev 2 mine is rev 1 and using bios F8g beta updates intel and giga sata firmware more memory compatiblity

good bios for me .link to list of bios let me know if you need any files/kexts :)

Jamzmar,

I got the Rev 2. I finally got audio working after patching the AppleHDA.kext and running a legacy889HDA.kext. Network I was forced to scour a round a bit, but I found a IONetworkingFamily.kext that seems to be working.

I've tried the DSDT from Tonymac for the FC version of my BIOS but the DSDT for the high end system on kexts.com (UD7 w/ 980) actually keeps the CPU at 28C idle even at 4.5Ghz. Got 20995 Geekbench, so I'm pretty happy there.

I got Soft Raid running now on my 2 velociraptors but finding a RC5 r693 that isn't a installer version has left me just using a thumb drive to get it booted for now.

No more kernel panics and I got 10.6.5 installed now no issue. Lesson learned with the BIOS, surprised I let that slip past me, but I was recovering from the fact a back plate I used on the CPU Cooler was lacking a insulator strip on it and when I first started, soon as I mounted the CPU cooler the system would just flicker and not even post. Some kind of ground issue, but I'm just glad it didn't hurt anything.

Great to hear your good to go. Been there done that with backplate :) You do know that the marvel sata ports runs raid 0 setup in bios achi raid 0

Ah, interesting. If it wasn't for the fact I just finished installing everything I'd probably try that out. Think I'll wait for some new drives to give that a shot.

I'm now fighting a bit with this DSDT I got from kexts.com. Seems to conflict with the Apple ATI 5770 or possibly the Bootloader is doing it. It boots up to the point where I should see the desktop, but I can hear the UI sounds but its visibly froze on the verbose logs. Since this card still works with Chameleon RC4 & my UD5 setup I'm leaving it there for now until I can figure out what video edits (if any) were made to this high met 980 DSDT I used.

System is rock solid now and actually begged to be overclocked a little to get it stable.

Really Make your own it will be acurate to your system. Its easy to do if you like send me or link the extracted acp_dsdt.bin from aida I will compile it .

I used a time machine backup and restored to Raid :) when I was testing.

Am I correct in thinking that DSDTSE extract will just mirror the DSDT file I'm already using?

I've got a XP image I use for Parallels I can burn but I didn't put a optical drive in the new box. Probably need to get a clean DSDT off all my machines. I normally program so I'm not too afraid to dig in. Last time I did it there was so much disinformation I gave up and just started using pre-supplied ones. Even diffing between my clean UD5 and what I'm using right now is pretty shocking - about 75% of it is different.

Starting to run low on spare drives heh.

I did a test running the Chameleon RC5 r693 I got on my working UD5 w/ Apple ATI 5770 and did the same thing. Boots to the last verbose log, I hear gmail notifier and my planner fire off some sounds, but no video signal made it.

Must be something with the bootloader making the video act funny even though Graphics Enabler is No. Chameleon RC4 684 works ok however, but I don't think I can use that bootloader with my 980X.

I used http://www.kexts.com/view/783-chameleon_2_...aller_r693.html. Looks like 700 is out now.

I believe it just copys the dsdt your using also. Your geek bench is great but with the correct dsdt it will be better is on mine anyway.

K, yeah it works ok for my 9800GTX, but this Apple ATI 5770 card required me to run the ATY_Init.kext and boot in x32. Only thing I can figure is the Bootloader is doing something different since I tried using the same DSDT on my UD5 system that normally works just to rule out the issue when I tried it on the UD7 and couldn't get a video signal. I probably could remote it with another computer or my ipad to see if I can make heads or tails what happened.

I've pulled a clean DSDT off my UD5 using #####. I'm going to try to do that with my UD7 next, but I may have to take the route you mentioned with XP or something after I get a optical drive in that machine. Wouldn't mind seeing how yours matches up with what I got so far. This high met 980 DSDT from kexts.com is noticeably cooler on the CPU because I think speedstepping is setup right. It's almost a 12C difference in temperatures - 28C vs 40C idle.

I am using the 700 no problems :) I can put a link to my dsdt and you can edit the cpu scope to your cpu ?

Had similar problems with different ATI cards and Dell 3008.

Kakewalk install worked fine, 4870 connected via DVI to Dell 3008 resulted in black screen after boot, but Snow was loading fine. Sending machine to sleep and waking up with power button...Desktop loads fine, picture on Dell.

ATI 5770 and 5870 only worked with tonymacs Bootloader - Chameleon 2.0 RC5 - ATI Experimental, same no Desktop on Dell via DVI, but working fine after wakep from sleep

Dell connected via Displayport worked without sending machine to sleep.

Another thing is, that my backpanel USB-ports worked perfect with my Apple USB keyboard for wakeup from sleep. But the onboard ports connected via header to my frontpanel could not wakeup the machine...

Alright, so I took Dr. Hurts RC4 r686 installer and was able to boot up my new UD7, 980X w/ 9800GTX+. I obviously lost the restart fix and UUID that came with RC5, but looks like it still boots the system and didn't notice any other side effects. My working theory is I could slap my ATI card in it now and boot safely.

I then booted my UD5, 920 w/ Apple ATI 5770 - and as I suspected it worked, and the 2560x1440 x(2) worked as expected.

Something in RC5 is hosing up the ATY_Init.kext. I had to alter it to Hoolock instead of Vervet (spelling) per a Tonymac thread as there are a handful of people out there using 24, 27" ACD's. I see "DEVICE IN SLOT 1" logged, but I never see it post the device ID like I do in RC4. My suspicion is maybe the PC branded ATI cards are conflicting, but I'm no expert. I've posted on the original thread on Tonymac to see if anyone else has run into this.

This will give me some time to fine tune my DSDT's. Appreciate everyones help/feedback.

To summarize all the above for anyone coming in to this at a later date:

1. Watch your CPU cooler backplates for possible grounding issues (I was using a Hyper212)

2. Double check your BIOS settings, they can sometimes get reset on you during testing (specially after a grounding issue)

3. 980X a interestingly sensitive processor that can't (at least for me) run on "Auto" settings. It asked nicely to even be overclocked mildly to get OSX to boot. I'm currently at 4.3Ghz w/ a 20057 Geekbench. Its mild enough that I idle around 28C~30C and spike around 68C. Since the processor is $999, I'm gonna leave it at that.

4. Take using other's DSDT's with a grain of salt. The high met 980 for the UD7 on kexts.com seems to have the best performance as other DSDT's had me idling at almost 40C. I'll be working on making my own shortly.

5. If you use a Apple branded ATI card it may have issues with later pre-releases of Chameleon (RC5).

Ok, another update -

I took my ATI 5770 out of my UD5 setup, and popped it into my UD7. Booting in x86_32, GraphicsEnabler=No, ATY_Init.kext in "Hoolock" it posts like before and the screen goes black. I remoted in via my iPad and I can see the desktop. I checked out "About this Mac" and its showing the 5770 but had no displays listed. I pulled out a Mini Displayport and put it in the other connection and my remote session switched to 2560x1440 but the monitor did not come on.

- I booted using Chameleon RC4 r684

So I backed that out, put the 9800GTX back in and moved to testing bootloaders. I did a cinebench 11.5 using CRC4 r684 and got the following score:

Cinebench_UD7.png

I then updated to CRC5 r700, rebooted and got the following:

Cinebench_UD7_RC5r700.png

Thats a noticeable difference!

I then for good measure did my UD5 w/ ATI 5770 running Chameleon RC4 r684

Cinebench_UD5.png

So moving back to my UD5 I tried the r693 version of the bootloader. The Video doesn't post so I remote in with my iPad.

UD5_RC5r693.png

This is the way it posts with Chameleon RC4 r684:

Trick to using a newer Prerelease Bootloader (RC5 r700) w/ a Apple Branded ATI Card -

1. Grab Kabyl's Chameleon r700 - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=231768

** Bit of information for anyone who has manually installed Chameleon in the past. I noticed that my drives were still booting CRC4 r684 even after moving that boot file to my drives directly. I ended up just putting that boot file in the i386 folder of Chameleon and doing another manual install.

2. Remove the ATY_Init.kext from S/L/E and be happy to know you don't have to do 32bit forcing anymore.

3. Update your Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist to the following:

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>AtiFb</key>
<string>Hoolock</string>
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>2560x1440x32</string>

4. Don't forget you can revert your arch=x86_32 to x86_64 now in your Kernel Flags.

I'm enjoying functional ACD's in 64bit mode. I even see my DVI connection. I'll attempt sleep and connecting a 3rd monitor later just to see if any of that changed.

r700_Hoolock.png

I have a similar setup and works the same but I have an issue with BIOS not recognizing memory DIMM's properly. It also can't read memory SPD info. It's only happens when I'm using Apple branded 5770 card. As the result I have the following:

post-391283-1295401759_thumb.png

Other than that system works fine.

Could you please check if your system reports the same(empty memory banks ad DDR2 instead of DDR3)?

thanks

My "about this mac" is totally cosmetic off the Extra/smbios.plist

My memory is not reporting anymore and I agree its probably something with the Apple ATI 5770 because it was reporting before I put that in.

Thanks, xenophex.

Now I'm wondering if its all just cosmetic issues or somehow having Apple ATI Radeon 5770 card hurts our system performance? I'm really having it just to drive my two ACD's 27''.

Did a quick Xbench of my UD7 Memory: OCZ Reaper PC3 12800

Score: 491.19

Ran it on my UD5 and got: OCZ Gold PC3 12800

Score: 566.56

So its a tad slower most likely because of my overclocking settings in order to get this 980X stable.

Geekbench on the 980X is still over 20K, where as my 920 is sitting at almost 14K.
