Hello, first of all this is my basic hardware lineup

Motherboard Foxconn A7DA-S

CPU AMD Phenom II X4 940

4 GB RAM

No video card installed yet

320GB SATA HDD

That's it, now the problem is I can't even get to boot the DVD with any of the kernels, it runs really slow and stays on the loading screen…and well I get the stop sign after a while.

Now I've found some posts(not at all helpful though, that's why I'm writing here) with my exact same motherboard(And with a Phenom II X4 CPU) and they have been able to do it so I know it's compatible and my guess is my BIOS settings are incorrect even though I've tried different configurations and played a lot with them options but I really don't know what's wrong.

By the way the error I get is "IOATA Controller blocking bus" and then "Still waiting for root device"

So I'd really appreciate some help!

Thanks a lot

Make sure your DVD drive is (i assume it's a PATA drive?) jumpered as master and connected at the end of the cable.

Unplug any other drives that you don't need during the install process.

Experiment with drive controller settings in the BIOS.

Try a SATA DVD drive.

Google 'still waiting for root device' and your motherboard chipset make and model for more ideas.

Thank you, I think the problem is I don't have a SATA DVD drive(it's IDE), I'll try getting one and post the outcome as soon as I test it out!

Check that your IDE DVDRW is jumper-set and connected as Master via an 80-wire cable to your MOBO.......

Try booting the install DVD with

-v busratio=20 cpus=1 busratiopath=3 noapic maxmem=2048

Ill try that, however, how do I jumper my IDE DVDRW drive as slave? I mean, do I need to physicaly move any jumpers from the MOBO or is it done via BIOS? Can't seem to find the setting

Look at the back of your IDE DVDRW.........

Move the jumper if present to the Master position and connect the DVDRW to the MOBO via the end (Black) connector of your 80-wire IDE cable.......see IDE Jumper and Cable Connection section in post #1 here.......

Ok I tried booting using

idlehalt=0 maxmem=1024

now it's been there "loading" for about 10 minutes, no stop sign this time.

Did the same with

-v idlehalt=0 maxmem=1024

and I get

ERROR: Firewire unable to determine security mode, defaulting to full-secure.

and of course it won't boot

OnBoard PCI IDE Controller [Enabled]

OnChip SATA Channel [Enabled]

OnChip SATA Type [AHCI]

SATA IDE Combined Mode [Enabled]

Legacy USB support [Enabled]

USB 2.0 Controller Mode [High Speed]

OnBoard 1394 controller [Enabled]

That's it I think, anything else?

What are the other options for SATA IDE Combined Mode ?

It can only be [Enabled] or [Disabled]

See what happens when it is [Disabled]........

Just tried it and the DVD doesn't load at all.

OK that setting must enable IDE and SATA to work alongside each other.....so nothing BIOS-wise unless you try with Firewire disabled.......
