OK, so I've been trying to get this to work for hours, and finally decided I'd sign up so I can ask the people here for help :D (BTW I did a lot of searching on the forum, and couldnt find anything conclusive for me)

Anyway, I've been trying to install SL Retail 10.6.3 on my PC (which is currently Vista/ubuntu)

I have a blank HDD ready for SL. I have the latest verison of #####. I have my BIOS setup for AHCI mode. I also have my purchased, legal copy of the Mac SL retail DVD. Here's the system I'm running:

CPU: Intel C2D e8500

GPU: ATI HD 4850

Mobo: DFI Lanparty DK x38

As I understand, there could be issues with the ATI card? Will I have to buy an nvidia card to make it work?

So, here's the deal. I put in #####. I get to the ##### screen, and swap out the ##### DVD for my Mac DVD. If I just press "enter" and try to install, I will get the Apple Logo screen for a bit, then ##### will tell me I need to restart.

I have tried using various boot flags, -x, -f, and -v (and combinations of them). If I use -x or -f, I will just be stuck at the Apple Logo forever. If I have it on "verbose " mode with -v, the last line is something about an Ethernet connection timing out.

Will I be able to use the ##### method after all? Or, if I can't, what else can I do to get my SL DVD installed? I've looked up many other methods but there are so many different factors and softwares, it really boggles the mind.

Anyway, if someone can help me I'd be super happy :D

Try unplugging all extra USB devices, other than the mouse and keyboard, also all unnecessary PCI express devices for the installation, such as a PCI X audio card that you might be using in Windows etc. Also, try disabling the ethernet in BIOS, then try again. Make sure you have ACPI 2.0 support turned on in the BIOS as well.

Those are just some things that sometimes tend to 'fix' #####'s efficiency for some people, also people often kinda ignore ACPI 2.0 support. Sorry if you already tried all of this and it didn't work. You can also try other methods of retail installation.

Cheers and good luck!

Okay.

Got it installed, the EmpireEFI bootloader worked great! Got my post-install stuff done and now it boots quickly right from my HDD!

But, I havent a clue as to how to get my ATI card to work with it. The resolution is bad, man, and I need to get a driver for my HD4850 so I can put it back up to 1680x1050. I've been looking for drivers, but it seems ATI hasnt released any for Macs. And I've been perusing the threads in the ATI forum but I'm still confused as heck.

But wait theres more!

I just now rebooted the first time after getting my post-install files taken care of. And now i get a lovely kernel panic error. And it doesnt work in safe mode, either. So theres another nice little issue (lol this is pushing me to the brink of insanity)

What model of HD4850 do you have? If your have a reference model (duel DVI) its really simple. 10.6.5 supports it without issue.

You can you use this if you don't want to edit your kext's LegacyATI4800Controller.kext.zip (credit Netkas). Or exactly what the last post says to edit the ATI4800Controller.kext.

Really? When I would go into "display", I could only select 1024x768, which is awfully low for a 22" monitor. On Vista I am using 1680x1050 res. I guess I'll have to read thru that thread to see about it

But that really doesnt matter right now because I'm having that kernel panic issue. I tried booting with -s, -x, -f, nothing works. It loads the Apple Logo then instantly gives me a kernel panic screen with an overlay telling me I need to reboot.

The kernel panic seems to be something about the kernel not matching the CPU. This onyl started occuring after I used some post-install kexts and files that I put in /extra/extensions/

Is there any way to un-do this and get it to work again?

Transmac is good for 15 days so you can remove add or play with your Extra folder

Do not remove or place kext's in the S/L/E folder sense those are guarded by permissions and will kernel panic if you mess with them using this method.

I use mostly to edit my com.apple.Boot.plist so I can get in through Windows7

Ok, so I got my kernel panic "fixed" by reinstalling SL, so now I'm updated to 10.6.5 and booting properly. I edited the ATI4800Controller kext, but still nothing, still stuck at 1024x768. Am I missing something here?

BTW its also not picking my headphones up, idk why, its not a USB device, just a headset with a mic plugged into the 3.5mms

LegacyATI4800Controller.kext install this to your Extra/Extensions

Use this last after installing kext's to build your mkext you should be good.

com.apple.Boot.plist should have

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key
<string>Yes</string>
<key>PciRoot</key>
<string>1</string>

Audio to look up would be Realtek ALC885... seems to be working other than not switching jacks right?

I just tried adding this:

<key>PciRoot</key>
 <string>1</string>

Because it wasnt there in my BOOT plist, however the GraphicsEnabler already was.

I then got that new kext utility version 2.4.2 and reinstalled my ATI4800Controller.kext (I didnt have a LegacyATI4800 kext, is it something I need to DL?)

But on boot, I just get a screen glitch, all white except for little bits of grey, its like small horizontal lines of pixels spaced across the screen. (btw this is the same glitch I get when I install Evoenabler)

So now Im in safe mode, which boots but still no working GPU.

As an aside, my 4850 is in the second PCIe slot, is this an issue? The first slot on my board seems to have died a few days ago, so I have to run it in the second slot or I get no video.'

(figured this "problem" out, Im just an idiot, LOL)

edit-Just DLed the Legacy controller and ran it thru the kext util, to no avail

Driver pkg... Awhile back on Leopard then Snow 10.6.0 this is how you got it working but worth a try in your case.

It might be also worth to take a look at if you indeed have a reference ATI HD4850!

Some tips:

1. When using mkext you need to rebuild this upon installing kext's and deleting them. Why? Its a cache for your kexts and it will load the improper information upon boot if you don't rebuild it. (Insanelymac companions step in if the info is wrong so it can be adjusted)

2. Try other method's you also have rom injection. READ @ROBASEFR post for method procedure

3. Most cards of today or relative to this year are not reference models. The core might have changed in revision considering the power/thermal dynamics seems to be taken care of. The ATI HD4890 is an example of a revision and it runs cooler and is an overclocked HD4870.

4. Power cycle (restart computer) and try different outputs and combinations.... DVI/VGA dongle in one output mix match. I found at times moving connection on an already booted system would not work but reboot it and yes the screen came on. Yes, thats very strange one would think the active switching would work always but NO not true.

5. Keep tinkering with it you will figure it out and read about your model and those that have it working. If your the first an pioneer best to you
