Hey guys,

I'm trying to install a retail copy of snow leopard on my Acer Aspire 5745 laptop:

i3-350M Processor 2.26 GHZ

Intel HD Graphics

2 GB Ram

500 GB HDD

Audio: Realtek ALC271X

Wifi: Atheros 9280

I'm using the #####+##### method. I installed with the 10.6.0 retail disk, then later upgraded too 10.6.2. Updates past 10.6.2 result in a kernel panic. After googling, many people with the same laptop (Aspire 5745*), are able to run 10.6.4 with a vanilla 10.4.0 kernel. The thing is, I'm running a 10.5.0 kernel, even after applying the macbook pro software update 1.3 (via pacifist, just the mach kernel and the intel cpu management kext).

Where can I get a vanilla 10.4.0 darwin kernel, and how do I apply it?

If I do get a kernel panic on boot, and none of the flags work, how do I install and delete kexts via the bootloader (if I can)? And just to mention, I do have an external drive with snow leopard 10.6.0 installed.

You can extract a 10.4.0 kernel from a 10.6.4 system update.

I don't understand why you're running a 10.5.0 kernel if you're on 10.6.2.

If the kernel version doesn't change after an update, check your com.apple.Boot.plist and see if it's set to load a kernel with a different name than mach_kernel.

Type uname -a in Terminal and post the output here.

Yea, the reason it had a 10.5 kernel was because I was booting off the ##### disk, rather than the hdd. After I booted off the hdd, system profiler reported running 10.4.

Now how would I go about updating to 10.6.4?

And if I'm updating to 10.6.4 anyways (which contains the 10.4 kernel), then why should I extract the kernel?

I gave up shortly after posting this thread, going back to win7, but I have a spare hard drive that I'll give this a try on.

Thanks for the reply, nobody was willing to help on any forum other than you :)

I answered your question, which was "where can I get a vanilla 10.4.0 Darwin kernel".

Your initial post is really confusing, I don't understand half of it.

lmao sorry, let me rephrase the problem that I had:

I'm trying to install snow leopard via 10.6.0 (retail disk) via #####/##### method.

Installation and everything works fine, and I'm trying to update it to 10.6.4, which is feasible based on other ppl with the same laptop as me.

When I try to update manually, with a 10.6.4 combo update dmg, I get a kernel panic. How would I go about updating, without getting a kp?

Answering that question right off the bat would require intimate knowledge of your hardware. You know more about it than I do.

When does the kernel panic occur? While the update is installing or when you try to boot after installing? If so, are you booting with your CD or a bootloader that's installed on your harddrive?

Either way, attach a screenshot of the kernel panic.
