Markeh
Hi I'm quite technical, but I am a complete noob when it comes to OS X. I've got an old rig that I'd like to run OS X 10.5.6 on (I doubt it would run Snow Leopard) MSI K8T Neo FIS2R AMD Athlon 3000+ (2GHz) 1GB PC2700 RAM 256MB FX5500 (unsure of brand) 40GB WD Protege HD (IDE) Medion DVD-RW (shows as Pioneer in XP and BIOS) Belkin G+ MIMO USB Adapter (10.4 drivers are available from Belkin) 500w Casecom PSU All these bits were free (I love you Freecycle), so it doesn't matter if I can't use any of them, as if not I will probably stick Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot on here and be done with it. I don't plan on dual booting if I can get OS X working, I have another machine I can run XP on anyway. I'm looking at using iPC 10.5.6, because I have found a very good step-by-step tutorial for that particular distro: http://andrewmajot.com/blog/2009/04/leopar...5-6-on-your-pc/ On there is a list of drivers that are included and need choosing. Only things I'm stumped on so far are: GPU driver - do I use NVdarwin 256MB or NVinject 256MB? I'm not using this rig for gaming, just to experiment with OS X. Sound driver - My board uses the ALC655 chipset, I can't see a driver for that in the iPC system, quick Google has produced some results but I haven't checked them in depth yet. Which other drivers would I need to install? My board runs a VIA K8T800 chipset with a VT8237. Sorry to sound like a total noob, thanks in advance for your help Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/237035-confused-with-installing-1056/ Share on other sites
abtekk
Ok. first off. remove any uneccasary hardware, this includes: -graphics cards -sound cards -usb hubs -usb webcams -speakers ETC So you are just left with a basic PC with keyboard, mouse and using only intergrated controllers. Now, follow the guide you found and get OSX booting 100% before adding new hardware, once that is done add your graphics card and boot again, if mac doesn't get a display with the new card inserted, boot from the disk and uncheck EVERYTHING in the customise menu and install the drivers. do the same with all the other hardware. as for your question, use the NVDarwin kext and if it doesn't work simply install the other. its a matter of trial and error, and for the sound card i have attached the driver your sound card should use, install it using KextHelper B7 AppleAC97Audio.kext.zip Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/237035-confused-with-installing-1056/#findComment-1582625 Share on other sites
Markeh
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the K8T Neo has no onboard graphics, so I have to run with the GPU installed. I wasn't going to leave the USB plugged in anyway. Thanks for your tips, too. I haven't got enough time to wait for iPC to download today, so I'm going to do this when I get spare time. This may be a few weeks, as I'm currently doing a lot of exams Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/237035-confused-with-installing-1056/#findComment-1582748 Share on other sites
