4870 10.6.4: Resolutionissue, Fans noisy

Hi,

running a long time 10.5.8 on:

C2D 1,8

ASRock Conroe1333

4 GB RAM

Asus 4870, 512 MB

QE & CI are working, Fan was very quiet, 1680x1050 @ DVI-VGA, everything's fine.

iLife 11 doesn't run under 10.5, therefore i installed 10.6.2 (3.6/Dan1234) on an extra HDD, upgraded to 10.6.4 (Combo) with #####.

Issues:

- Card shows as 4890 in System-Profiler

- GPU-Fan is nearly at fullspeed

- no 16:9-Resolutions (only a handfull 4:3-Res.) (have only DVI-VGA)

Tried:

PCI EFI, Evoenabler doesen't work

Chameleon 2 RC4 with Lizard and LegacyATI4800Controller.kext doesn't work.

Any hints? Are there old kext alive? How can I check it?

Regards

Michael

hey what you gotta do is change you bios settings for your card with the bios editor and set your2d clocks to the same as 3d then increase your pwm ramp to be steady 50% until load temps at 70 and make them increment up by 20% after 60c, save the bios and flash it and it should work. Also use pc efi 10.6 with GraphicsEnabler=Yes kernel flag in boot.plist if you want you can save a copy of your rom to /Extra and use the UseAtiRom=Yes kernel flag in boot.plist and rename your rom "your devid here_1002.rom" and the bootloader will use your original rom that you just flashed to ur card.

it worked on my 4850x2 2d is way faster now in windoze.

I'd used PC EFI 10.6 before. It was a part of dan1234's DVD and did'nt worked.

If the missing resolutions will apear and everything is fine instead of the noisy fan, I will perhaps follow your recommentions with the BIOS. Thanks a lot!

 • 2 weeks later...

Hi Michael,

I'd the same problem (HD4870 GPU fan runs very noisy at highest speed after initializing GUI - SL 10.6.5).

After spending several hours, this worked for me:

- remove EVOenabler.kext

- use GraphicsEnabler=yes (possibly edit ATI4800Controller.kext/Contents/Info.plist to match your PCI ID).

That's it.

Maik
