MSI X58M Installation

Hello People,

I figured I would share how my desktop is running since the forums and the community is mostly responsible for my success but mostly digital_dreamer.

I am NOT using kexts for my video card. I am using an EFI string. I used EFIStudio to generate my EFI string and suggest anyone who wants to use an EFI string do the same.

First question everyone asks "Whats in my extra's folder?"

Here ya go:

screenshot20101026at922.png

Xbench scores are:

WITH DISK

screenshot20101026at916.png

WITHOUT DISK

screenshot20101026at917.png

I also Did an OpenGL test

screenshot20101026at914.png

Geekbench Score (64-bit): 12000 (not sure, have too many apps running right now) but with apps its 10051

I am upgrading my RAM soon from 4GB to 10GB So these tests will need to be rerun by then. Should have my new RAM sometime tomorrow.

If anyone has questions Im willing to answer them in this topic.

The only thing that does not work for me is sleep but seeing as its a desktop I don't really care. boot time is quick (15-20 sec)

Any questions, Requests post here.

Sincerely,

J.D. Cordero

Hello Again,

Did you fix the HPET problem in this DSDT? I downloaded the latest one but I still have the problem.

I get this:

img0094ly.jpg

EDIT (Jan 05, 2010):

This problem was also fixed while I was working on the DSDT with madl0n. I don't know if it was a bug in the DSDT or the fact that HPET was disabled in BIOS.

AND

img0091w.jpg

EDIT (Jan 05, 2010):

The No HPET problem was my own fault. It was disabled in the BIOS. If you get this problem, CHECK YOUR BIOS SETTINGS before you post.

Too make sure i'm doing everything right. Here is my Extra folder and boot.plist

ALso, I reran the program you set just to be sure.

Here it is: send_me.zip

I hope this gets the DSDT fixed soon.

Thanks again,

J.D. Cordero

this is what you need

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=83522

+ NullcpuPM in Extra/Extensions

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext.zip

+ DSDT in Extra

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=84007

--------------------------------

even if you do not get the native power management

the ideal is to use the least amount of kext (extra)

AND

clean install

Hello Everyone,

Madl0n is helping me fix/make a DSDT for the X58M. It works 98%. I noticed my graphical preformance is worse with the DSDT. I will be contacting madl0n to see why this is happening.

When this is all fixed I will post my working DSDT but you can also use Madl0n's DSDT Patcher when he updates it with the new information he has gathered from my motherboard.

Won't be Long Now :(

EDIT:

Actually, I'll post it here.

This is my old Extra folder setup:

Screen_shot_2011-01-05_at_1.57.25_PM.png

And this is the setup Madl0n helped me with:

Screen_shot_2011-01-05_at_1.57.10_PM.png

Using my old setup I get great graphical performance (Nvidia GTX 275), While with madl0n's Its a bit slower and the finder actually bugs out sometimes. Anyone have any clues as to why?

One problem that the DSDT did not fix was Sleep. The machine will turn off but when you tell it to wake up the screen stays black. I don't know why this happens or if its related to the fact that my video card is not one of the most supported ones. I'll research this and try and fine an answer. If you know why, Please share.

Madl0n has told me to do a fresh installation of OSX but that is hard for me as I cannot use my video card during installation. The current installation I did by installing from a Mac to a hard disk and applying the needed fixes to get my video card working.

I am also trying to make a kind of distro or restoration disk which has OSX 10.6.5 prefixed and updated. The idea being that if my installation ever crashes I just put in a DVD and tell it where to restore and I have a brand new mac (so to speak). If anyone has any ideas on how to do that please contact me.

Sincerely,

J.D. Cordero

I'm thinking about using the X58m board but with either a 8400gs or a 9500gt. Am I going to run into these same issues? I was planning on just using ##### and #####. MSI X58M - Refresh - February 2011

I purchased the MSI X58M Micro-ATX mother board about a month ago and brought it up using an image from a Gigabyte EX58 install and manually patching in the files that I found in this thread.

Now my short term goal was a fresh OS X install with all updates to the current 10.6.6.

My hardware: MSI X58M motherboard, i7-950 CPU, 6 GB memory, PNY GTX 460 video card, two DVI LCDs, SATA OD and SATA HDD, USB Kb and mouse.

Follows is a detailed install outline guide (assumes a cabled Ethernet connection to the Internet).

a. used ##### v 2.6 (download the zipped iso from TonyMacX86 download page and burn the CD).

b. at the ##### screen prompt, place the Apple Retail OS X 10.6.3 in the OD, wait until the green activity light goes out, press F5.

c. select the OS X DVD, enter this boot argument "-v -x PCIRootUID=1" and press enter, this boot to the DVD takes a while.

d. at the first screen of the DVD install, click next, from the top menu bar select Disk Utility, create a GUID partition of something greater then 10 GB.

e. proceed with the installation of 10.6.3 to the selected new partition.

f. when the installation completes (it took 16 minutes on my setup), click on the "Restart" prompt.

g. during the reboot, replace the ##### cd in the OD and at the ##### screen prompt, select your new installation and use this boot argument "-v -x PCIRootUID=1", and press enter.

h. sense this is a "safe boot" there won't be any welcome movie, click though the account setup providing whatever information you need to and login at the login prompt.

i. open Safari and goto Apple Support MAC OS and down load the 10.6.6 combo update (this takes a while).

j. use Safari and goto TonyMacX86 download page and download ##### (v 3.2.0) and tonymacx86-NVIDA-Update.

k. use Safari and goto InsanleyMac Forum Tutorials (The Genius Bar), locate the thread "MSI X58M Installation", goto post # 12 and download the DSDT.aml by selecting the link in the post.

l. close Safari.

m. open a finder window to the DownLoads directory. Open the Mulitbeast zip file and drag the Mulitbeast icon to the desktop.

n. drag the tonymacx86-NVIDA-Update to the desktop.

o. drag the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg to the desktop.

p. drag the DSDT.aml file to the desktop

q. click to open ##### - leave open on the desktop.

r. click the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg and follow the prompts to run the update, however DO NOT restart the system when the update completes.

s. now click on the Mulitbeast window to give it focus (note the app may close before you complete the menu selections, just reopen the app and continue making the selections), click to continue, click to continue, click to continue, click Agree. Select UserDSDT Install, System Utilities, and OSx86 Software. Follow the prompts to start the app.

t. when ##### completes, close the app. If you are running a GTX 4xx video card, run the tonymacx86-NVIDA-Update now.

u. eject the ##### CD and reboot to your new installation.

I re-ran ##### and used it to install VoodooHDA v 0.2.1 for working sound.

This version of ##### installs fakeSMC.kext v 3.1.0 into /Extra which is not my personal choice so I copied and pasted version 2.7.2 over the existing file. The reason is with v 3.1.0 the iStat Pro does not display all of the temps.

I also edit the com.apple.Boot.plist Kernel Flags to <string>-v</string> to get verbose boot messages and the 64 bit kernel.

You will get a prompt for software update… go ahead and run the update to be current.

CREDITS - this install is made possible by the efforts of many others: Credit to OSX86 community, Tony of Tonymacx86, the Voodooprojects team, javiercordero20 (thread starter and major contributor), and MaLdOn, Moderator, for the DSDT.aml.

Note: The PNY GTX 460 video card was problematic when installed on my GigaByte P55M system but has been solid performer on the X58 based systems for me.

Summary: This install is very vanilla Retail OS X. The /Extra directory has one file. Only modifications to /S/L/E is the addition of the VoodooHDA.kext for sound and the NVIDA driver update.

enjoy
