MSI G31TM-P21 - Successful and Working

I just completed a retail install of Snow Leopard with the following motherboard and components.

MSI G31TM-P21 That I got for $29 from Newegg with a promo code.

Intel Celeron E3300 2.5 GHz dual Core

GIGABYTE GV-N84STC-512I GeForce 8400 GS

As stated earlier, I used a retail copy of SL. My install went like this.

1. Set bios to all defaults.

2. Enabled HPET in the bios. There's no option for AHCI with this mobo. The support for it is already built in.

3. Used Empire EFI to boot into the SL install.

4. Once the installer was finished, I used ##### for post setup options and to install the boot loader.

5. In order to get the sound working, I used this link for the Realtek ALC888s kext.

In closing

The Celeron processor reads as a Core 2 Duo due to similar architecture with C2Ds. The video card is recognized properly. I turned sleeping off. Built in NIC works. Front USB ports are working. Front Panel sound is not working.

I'm also dual booting with Windows 7 Ultimate. That required a couple of extra steps. I'm using Easy BCD, which once the Mac partition is selected, it boots to chameleon.

Which version of Empire EFI did you use and on ##### did you just use ##### or did you have a userDSDT? I tried with the 1.085 version of Empire and used ##### and it didn't recognize my onboard network. Also does it show up as 2 cores on your system or just 1?

Any help would be appreciated.

This is the same board I have. My specs are:

MSI G31TM-P21 mobo

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 ghz Dual Core

4gb RAM

MSI GeForce 210 512MB PCI-Express Video Card

Seagate SATA II 500 GB HDD

I used the iAtkos S3 v2 to install on my board. Video works (Not the PCI-E Card), sound works, built in NIC does not work (have PCI nic card in that does work).

I tried the retail version I bought but not everything worked.

I want to be able to have this boot up as a single HDD that can boot up without any bootdisc. Is this possible?

What all files, etc and steps would be used for this (i.e. what bootloader, what bootdisc, etc)? Does your setup boot on its own or does it require the bootdisc?

In order to stop using the boot disc, you need to install the boot loader. ##### or EmpireEFI both have this. It'll be called Chameleon. They both have a folder for post installation options on the CD/ DVD that you're using.

I believe the network kext should be included in either ##### or EmpireEFI. I used whatever was the latest version at the time of my original post.

I have this board, and I used iAtkos v2 s3 to install. I had a battle, but finally got things working (ide optical drives don't appear to work for booting, had to use the SATA out of my windows machine). My question is, any help on updating to 10.6.7? I started with 10.6.4, but had to clone back my initial install as I couldn't get it to boot after the update.

Thanks

MSI G31TM-p21

Celeron E3400 2.6ghz dual core (reads as core2 duo)

2 gb ddr2 800

400gb SATA Samsung hd

Asus Geforce 7300 (card I had lying around, works with natit and graphics enabler)

Realtek 8139 network (works great with added snow kext)

EDIT: I tried Hazard 10.6.6i, was able to install, but can't boot outside of safe mode. (doesn't list support for my video card, and kexts didn't help). I also can't get my network to install, and can't mount anything but the main hard drive. I have reverted to the iAtkos install, hopefully I can get that to update sometime.

EDIT2: SUCCESS! Used 10.6.7 combo update, and replaced problem kexts with originals (ie replaced Realtek kext with snow kexts, replaced natit). Network may be slightly unstable, need more testing, but it boots with QE/CI and works faster than it did on 10.6.3
