Hello all,

So the weirdest thing happen to me last night. I have been fussing around with my snow leopard install for the past few weeks. I keep having an issue with my usb headset. So I have been trying different distros, vanilla installs and so on.

So in my machine I have two HD and they are both partitioned and I have multiple installs on them. I do this to test stuff out, so if I mess something up, i can boot into another and try and fix it.

I had installed the iPortable distro on one of the partitions. To my surprise my headset didn't have an issue anymore. So I had what I thought was a brilliant idea, I'll just copy all of the kext in the /extra folder from the iportable install to my current working install. I rebooted and headset issue was still there. So I had another brilliant idea, " I'll just copy ALL of the kext in the /s/l/e from the iportable to the current" I used kext helper to do so. After it finished installing all of the kext, I hit the button to repair the cache and permissions. I had the applications finder window open behind kext helper, and I noticed that stuff was moving around, I thought no biggie, probably stuff just sorting around. At the same time I got error from kext helper about my password not being correct.

It was then that I noticed that the list of applications started getting shorter. I soon realized that stuff was being deleted from my hd. Computer didn't completely freeze, I could still move mouse around, but I couldn't open or close anything. I rebooted, and received a boot1 error, but luckily I had just finished making a chameleon boot cd. I popped it in, loaded another working snow install and took a look at the original snow install.

There was only 84 files left on that partition, it deleted almost everything! I don't know what went wrong, I'm pretty sure its not a good idea to install so many kext at once, but could that have prompted it to delete everything?

If anyone can shed some light on the matter,
