lv2drft
Hey all! iPhone developer in training looking for a minimum spec (price) video card that will meet SDK OpenGL requirements. It seems former posts confirm the "GeForce FX 5200" is the one to go with. I looked it up on Ebay and was suprised to see all of the different types that share the name "GeForce FX 5200." Anyway, on to the question: I was wondering if you might be able to confirm something for me really quick-- I'm finding tons of different versions (all PCI) of this video card on Ebay. There's one that says its for Mac, one for PC. Some are 128MB, some 256. Does any of this make a difference or is there a certain Geforce FX 5200 that is fully compatible and some that are not. Would you maybe be able to quickly look at these links and let me know which (or all) would work / and what kext to use to install it? http://cgi.ebay.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-FX-5200...4#ht_4064wt_911 http://cgi.ebay.com/ZOTAC-NVIDIA-GeForce-F...1d#ht_500wt_698 Also, would it make a difference (compatibility wise) if I went with 128 or 256MB? Thanks in advance!
Gringo Vermelho
Support for 5xxx series Geforce cards was dropped in 10.5.6! If you want to run 64-bit 10.6.x you need at least a 8xxx series video card. Don't buy a Mac card for use with a PC, it will not work without modification. lv2drft
Thank you for the heads up!! That would have been a waste of money! I am, however, content on sticking with my current 10.5.8 setup (that's all that's needed to run iPhone SDK) and have no real need to upgrade to Snow Leo. Please feel free to simply respond to the following question with a link to another post, if one exists. Obviously I have done my due diligence looking around the forums for this already, and haven't found my answer yet, but I could really use the advice: What would, then, be the cheapest video card that would work with 10.5.8 and has been tested and verified QE, CI, and OpenGL compatible? And of course, what special process would I have to go through to get it installed and recognized? Sorry for sounding newbish, I've been doing this for 8 months now, but even with the sleepless nights, can't still understand fully how to figure it all out (even with browsing posts). If you would be so kind as to even give me a link, I would appreciate it. Of course, a bonafide answer would just make my day as well as other community members in my situation. Thanks -Drift
Gringo Vermelho
Probably something in the Geforce 7 series. Those won't work in 64-bit Snow Leopard but will be just fine for 10.5.8. The 7600 GT is reasonably fast and very compatible but there are others that will work as well. The 9500 GT is another cheap card that will work well. And it'll be easier to find than a 7600 GT. Google 'Guide for all nvidia boards', that will tell you everything you need to know about how to get the card working with OS X.
