Pink Waters
I noticed in my first snow leopard build that my ASUS SATA DVD drive randomly spins up from time to time as if its checking for a dvd in it or something,.. (some kinda polling) I have read and searched around and found people asking about this issue but no fix/workaround is there. some people have this issue with some drives and other not, specially with sony drives, they don't have this problem. but don't know the reason! its also possible that this issue prevents auto sleep. so anyone can have any suggestions for a fix? or on what causes this issue? Gringo Vermelho
Disable sleep for hard drives in the energy saver prefs panel.
Pink Waters
Disable sleep for hard drives in the energy saver prefs panel. Does that fix the issue ? I cannot test now cause I am waiting for my PSU... and if so, why does that affect some DVD drives and not others?! edit: checked here and it seems that this guy had the same problem and he reported that putting hard disks to sleep when possible didn't fix his issue.. I will check when I get my PSU though..
geiman
Yeah I'm not sure about this either; my first hack was the Toshiba laptop in my signature and it did the same thing. Evey once in a while I would hear it poll the dvd drive, not sure why though. On my desktop it seems to have stopped; I'm having a hard time remembering when it did though, so I'm not sure whether its the DSDT I've hacked together or what. Might be something to look into. Gringo Vermelho
(..) it seems that this guy had the same problem and he reported that putting hard disks to sleep when possible didn't fix his issue.. That's not what I wrote, read my post again There's also a way to fix it via DSDT but there are some specific hardware requirements that must be met for that fix to work. It's in here somewhere: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1280888
Pink Waters
There's also a way to fix it via DSDT but there are some specific hardware requirements that must be met for that fix to work. It's in here somewhere:http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1280888 Well I took the time and read through the whole thread! and it turned out to be that guy is insanely lucky! first he tries to fix the issue through DSDT to no avail, then he contacts Samsung tech support telling them about the issue, and then what ? they looked into the matter and released a firmware fix!! lol that does not happen everyday... however, as it turned out to be a firmware issue, I made some digging and found that my drive can be "Crossflashed" to another brand unless they are the same chipset/components or one of them is a rebrand of the other, and it turns out to be that I can crossflash it to multiple Liteon models .. I will test and report back
geiman
Good luck crossflashing; luckily dvd drives are cheap in case something goes bad. That guy is definitely lucky; before all the DSDT patching came about I tried telling Toshiba that their latest bios update had an error in it that killed my sound for Linux (and OS X) but of course after countless calls, all I got was a "yeah, sure, we'll look into that sometime". Pink Waters
also I found this post in the apple discussions forums, it appears that they are experiencing a similar problem, and some fixes introduced throughout the thread... maybe some people can try one of these fixes and report back. rbilsbor
I'm experiencing the exact same thing with my LG LS120 Blu-ray drive -- just asked a question about it in another thread. I can confirm that turning off "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" does NOT fix the problem. FWIW, I suspect it's Growl that is culprit, as seen in the apple support forum referenced above. I definitely didn't have this problem before, and I only recently started using Growl, so I'll report back if disabling it fixes the issue.
