flipflp
A little embarrassed to be making this post, but I'm at wits end. I know my inexperience with OSX and my hardware are making the problem, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer. Here's my hardware: i7-930 Gigabyte x58a-UD3R 4 GB of PC12800 RAM during install ATI 5770 1GB in PCI-E 16x slot 1 Asus SATA DVD-RW in white SATA_1 80 GB HFS+J Formatted SATA drive in white SATA_0 USB Keyboard and Mouse during install ACHI Modes set, 64-bit HPET, etc in BIOS Using Kakewalk 2.2 on CD to boot to an imaged 10.6.3 USB stick. I can't seem to get Kakewalk USB to boot, so this method is the closest I've been to actually starting the install. The issue I'm running into: no matter what I do is once I get to the Kakewalk screen (Chameleon boot selection screen), choose my OSX USB stick in verbose, it starts working, then gets to a point I can't catch because it scrolls too fast, then my video card fan goes to 100%, the screen blacks out and it doesn't do anything more. I've never gotten past this point. The reason I'm using Kakewalk is because it has support for my motherboard, but I've also looked into ##### + ##### and I've run into the same problem. Should I try a different installer? I know my video card isn't really ideal for a hackintosh but has support now since the newest iMacs use a 5700 series card. Is there something I can do to get the install to start with it or should I buy a cheap NVidia PCI-E card for the install then swap once everything is working? I'm hoping I'm just missing something stupid, but if my hardware is really the issue I'll head to the Best Buy and get something to get the install going. Thanks so much! Ok, I'm pretty sure what I'm missing is some terminal commands at the beginning of my install, at the Kakewalk window. I'm going to give -v -x cpus=1 busratio=21 a try and see what happens. flipflp
umm...have you seen this thread a few spaces down? http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=220199 I have, but my board is a version 1.0, not the 2.0 that post references. I went through the first few pages to see if anyone with that board had the same problem, as well as searching the forum but I can't seem to peg down any search terms that find anything relevant. I might be a noob but posting was my last resort. I have searched/changed hardware/troubleshot for hours and hours now. J.B
ok, sorry, had to check have you tried installing with a vanilla kernel (retail disc)? flipflp
Well, the 10.6.3 version I have imaged on to the USB stick is just a retail DVD rip, it's not any specific version. Kakewalk I assume is just installing some .kexts and what not to support my motherboard, not modifying the kernel. I just tried booting with the options -x -v -f cpus=1 busratio=21. I watched it load all of the extensions and what not, then gets to the same point, I'm assuming when the screen should go grey and the installer should start and it does the same old dance. Full speed video card fan, black screen. I'm downloading iAtkos s3 right now because I read on the Kakewalk forums that someone used that instead with success. It's also 10.6.3 version. J.B
try installing the myhack package (google it) on your USB installer, select the options appropriate to you, add the other kexts you want to the extra folder it creates on the USB and the boot it with the flags -v -f Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/227149-kakewalk-install-not-starting-video-card-fan-full-speed/#findComment-1522409 Share on other sites
flipflp
Figured out my problem. The video card. I had to use the newest ##### ATI 5xxx.2 boot disk. Now I'm just working out problems with the kexts in OSX. It's still progress. Thanks! Khan_Man
Yes, 10.6.3 doesn't have 5770 support. 10.6.4 maybe does, I've heard, also Netkas has some kexts, something about mac mini updated drivers to. flipflp
The problem wasnt support for the 5770 once I've installed, which is what you are referring to and for the most part I think thats been figured out. My problem was a total kernel panic once the bootloader started trying to install SL. That was fixed with the newest ##### with 5xxx series support, which also has the kexts and the ATY_int in #####.
