I have just installed OSX 10.5.7 on an old compaq EVO. I was surprised to find that immediately after installing and booting into OSX for the first time, the ethernet was active and I was immediately able to connect to the internet without installing any kexts (I'm even posting from it right now) but, if I restart the machine with the network cable plugged in, the ethernet adaptor dies and I can't connect to the internet again until I reinstall the OS. Unplugging the cable before shutting down will prevent this, but I'd like a better solution.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is there some way I can reset my ethernet adaptor from the terminal or rectify this issue without having to reinstall the OS every time it happens?
