My Hacintosh Build

Alright,

This is my first post here, I am a video editor. I use Mac, of course! I would like to build a hackintosh simply because I like the idea of being able to customize the unit to my desires.

Here is my Configuration.

ASUS DSEB-DG Dual LGA 771 Intel 5400 SSI EEB 3.61 Dual Intel Xeon Server Motherboard

2 X Intel Xeon E5440 Harpertown 2.83GHz LGA 771 80W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80574E5440A

2 x GIGABYTE GV-N285UD-1GH GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP

Ready SLI Support Video Card

I also have selected a case, powersupply, RAM, Hard Drives, and Monitors. I don't think those things have much relevence though.

Will this hardware configuration work with Snow Leopard?

Not to rain on your show, but why would you choose CPUs that are "old school"? Dual Xeon E5440 systems run about 6100 to 8800 Geekbench. A single CPU i7-860 with minimal OC will get 9100 GeekBench.

While Geekbench is not the end-all bench mark, it is an easy reference.

Now if you already have the parts that is another story.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately or fortunately for me depending on how you look at it. I haven't kept up with all the new advances in multicore systems because I landed a full time videographer/editor job. So last time I looked at anything Harpertown was the big dog. (Its also much easier to research graphics cards)

I took the time to research a few things, and now (thanks to your advice) I've completely remade my wishlist, and it now includes:

ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601950

GIGABYTE GV-N285UD-1GH GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

I'm very excited to get started on building the new editing system!

You don't need an i7-950 - the i7-930 will work just as well, be easily overclockable, and save you a bundle of cash, but if you want to use it you can. ;) I'm not sure the GTX 285 works - I think it does, but I use an HD 4890 so my experience with NVIDIA is limited. The motherboard should be fine, though Gigabyte gets much more support among hackintosh users. Make sure to use triple-channel RAM over dual-channel.

The GTX 2xx series work great, as far as they feature double DVI. You just need an enabler like Chameleon 2 RC4 and it's "out of the box".

I do agree with Mackilroy about the CPU and motherboard. Before buying the latter, search for tutorials and possible support.
