dual boot after kakewalk?

I have been searching through the forums for dual boot solution but none seem to fit what I need.

I installed SL 10.6.3 using the kakewalk method and all is working well, but now I want to do a dual boot using Windows 7 and have had nothing but trouble. I first tried just booting off the install disk, that won't work because it's GUID partition. I then tried the modded version of bootcamp, but that seems to only work with XP.

I have been looking into the chameleon bootloader but I don't know if that will work since I already did kakewalk?

This worked for me.

Boot into SL and open the Disk Utility. Create a new partition and name it i.e. WIN7 that is >10Gb in size to accomadate Win7, then format it MS DOS. Reboot with the WIN7 install disk and select to install to your new WIN7 partition. Once the install completes shut down WIN7 and reboot back into SL using the original boot disk used in the install as WIN7 willl have distroyed most of your bootloder and will not boot by default. Once SL comes up reinstall the boot loader onto the HDD using ##### and selecting chameleon bootloader. Remove the boot disk and restart and you should be presented with the boot loader screen where you will have the choice of WIN7 or SL.

Let me know how you go.

The method I used worked for me however check this out also as I know a few who used this method without any problems:

Hi there SV2 - i'm interested in doing this as well but was worried this issue might occur if inserting the Win7 disc and allowing the bootloader to run. Did you try unplugging the OSX drive and installing Win7 onto a separate disk? I heard that this is the best way to do it from people using Empire EFI. Hope this isn't teaching you how to suck eggs but might be successful. Look forward to knowing how you get on.

I can tell you with absolute confidence that the method I mentioned works 100%, I just set it up on another computer and again no problem! The only thing to watch for (something that nearly gave me a heart attack) is if you upgrate to 10.6.3. Because the upgrade overwrites a number of things I just re-ran the kakewalk boot loader for my mobo and in the process it messed with easy BCD. When I tried to open either the mac os or windows it was not happy. Solution use the repair option with the windows install disk to repair that install. Reload windows and open EasyBCD and just remove the mac boot option and add again. Bingo everything worked again.

Just incase anyone else uses protools when I went to reboot the new 10.6.3 install it crashed due to Pace anti priacy extentions. Without then Protools wont run so solution was to boot back in with kakewalk or your bootloader on CD. Uninstall the Pace utils, reboot then reinstall and it was all back to normal.

Hope this helps!

OK SV2 - this is how i have got Windows 7 dualbooting with OSX 10.6.3 using KAKEWALK - PERFECTLY!

I can only vouch for this on Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Mobo and with each OS installed onto a separate drive.

1. Make sure the BIOS is set up as per the KAKEWALK instructions.

2. Unplug the drive with OSX on it - using the same drive partitioned to run Win7 and OSX is problematic and from what i have read leads to both OS's becoming unstable.

3. Plug a nice clean HDD into one of the GSATA ports (they are white unlike the blue SATA ports next to them) on the Mobo

4. Start up your beast with Win7 install disc (only tried with 64 bit) in the DVD drive

5. Install Win7 on this disk as usual

6. Quit and restart, load all updates etc, make sure it's booting ok, still without connecting the OSX drive.

7. Replug the OSX drive and start the computer. For me it started and shut down and then started correctly. if left to run the computer boots into OSX now.

8. To load into Win7 hit 'any key' when prompted by the bootloader and it gives you the choice of three startup disks. Pick the 'Reserved for system' option (not the NFTS one) and watch as your Hackintosh boots up windows.

IMHO this is the simplest and most elegant way to dualboot - no messy hacking or having to deal with the problems that arise when dualbooting SL with Win7 on the same drive. I've been switching between the two all day and they don't seem to mess with each other at all - as it should be! Also if one drive crashes you still have a bootable system. It also should allow you to get going with RAID arrays in OSX that would not be easy if the Win7 partition was on the same disk.

Anyhow - hope you have luck with this.

thanks for all the feedback

Doc_Tor I followed everything you said and it worked fine. To clarify I intended to have Both operating systems on one drive so I could use the second as back up. Using separate drives for each OS is definitely the simpler/better method, if I ever have 4 drives I will go that route.

I had not seen ##### before(silly noob ;) ) that is a great app! I have Chameleon installed and booting without issue, fixed my sound at the same time :) .

I found this guide http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/dua...-os-x-snow.html

Best I've seen, wish I followed that instead of kakewalk to avoid a few headaches. Kakewalk really is just chameleon and SL put in a fancy installer now that I understand it.

Glad it all worked out for you! Its great to be able to share with others what you learn in this sometimes painful process!

Hi All,

Agree with the others here. Has to be 2 seperate HDD's and it's pretty flawless. I have an EX58-UD4P and after install all I had to do was change the audio output in settings and install the ATI file from the boot disc so my 4890 works.

Problem I am looking for help on is that the bootloader comes and goes too quick. With Chameleon I used to get 20-30 seconds before it loaded so i had time to chose the right OS. With the Kakewalk bootloader it's like 3 seconds. If i'm flipping of my shoes or something I miss it and have to start again.

Any idea how to change the delay of the bootloader so we get something a little longer?

kakewalk uses the chameleon bootloader. If you are using a flash drive to boot you will have to change its theme. Use ##### (mentioned earlier on this thread http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ibo...c-os-x-on.html) and go under advanced options. At the bottom is an option for themes and you can choose from a couple. The standard tonymac theme should do what you want. Remember to change the install location to the flash drive.

In ##### you can also install the bootloader to your HD (so you don't have to use a flash drive). The link in my earlier post has a nice guide on how to do that, but keep in mind it will use different kexts than the kakewalk bootloader. If you already have chameleon on your HD check the box System Utilities as well when changing the theme.

Hey Mate

I have the bootloader and everything installed to Hard Drive. I actually did see posts about ##### and thought that would be the answer but when i pop in the ##### disc everything is greyed out except install bootloader which i don't need anyway? I can see the themes options and the like but as they're greyed out i can't action any of them? I am not sure why they're greyed out at all?

I did find a way to extend the boot delay time through an apple.com file but i'd like a nice GUI instead just to make life a bit easier for the wife. No idea how to install one though.

Any help appreciated.

sorry about the long wait to respond

##### is installed like a regular app, it's not a bootloader. In ##### you can install a number of kexts as well as bootloaders.

To change the boot countdown go MacHD/Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist and edit this line

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>1</string>

either remove it or make the time longer

but it sounds like you have already done that, and you are looking for a GUI? Do you plan on changing the countdown on a regular basis? After the time is changed you should be set.

Hello all,

I have been an extremely happy kakewalk user for quite some time now. Recently, I decided to install W7 to get back to my gaming habits (especially Battlefield).

My specc:

Gigabyte EX58-UD3R

Intel i7 920

6 GB RAM

GTX 280

1 x 500GB Hdd

With OSX sitting happily in partition number 1 of my hdd, I decided to install W7 on a smaller partition in the same hdd. I followed this little guide here

http://www.hcetech.com/2010/12/28/booting-...ustom-built-pc/

Frankly, it was a no-brainer. All I did was install W7 as normal in my partition 2 and then set the MBR over to my OSX partition.

So I followed the terminal commands outlined in the link above and I am stuck at:

Verifying DMI pool data .....................

Normally, after that point the bootloader would come up and osx would launch.

It currently stops there, it does not freeze, but does not show the bootloader either. I can only get to OSX only via the usb bootloader of Kakewalk.

I did re-installed Kakewalk but the bootloader still does not come up after the "Verifying DMI pool data" part. It is as if it can't find my drives (although they do get picked up in BIOS no problem).

Does anyone have any similar experience? If not, how did you get around to dual-booting kakewalk-osx with windows?

Thanks in advance.
