Ok so I am a TOTAL and obvious n00b here... and I just ordered a new Dell Inspiron 1545 with the following specs:

  • Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400, 2.2GHz, 800MHz, 1M L2 Cache
  • 4GB, DDR2, 800MHz 2 Dimm (I suppose this is memory)
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
  • 320G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
  • Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini Card
  • Integrated 1.3M Pixel Webcam

SOOO anyways I read a few threads already on here, including http://bit.ly/bwsFtg and http://bit.ly/9SNtKY ...

-----

I was wondering how to go about setting up a dual-boot for Windows 7 and Snow Leopard on this computer. Granted,

I do not know what kernels or kexts or any of that stuff is, so I am really on my knees here.

---

From what I gathered, I have to install iATKOS v7 or something (a clone of osx for PC's, I assume?) and then use something called Chamelon (no idea!) or something. There also appears to be Drivers i have to install (btw if I do a dual boot, will everything still work in win7 if they don't work in snowleopard? justwonderingkaythanks)

--

Basically, could someone explain what I need, or maybe how I could do all this? Even an explanation of kexts and kernels would be nice.

Did you ever get this to work? I have the same exact laptop (with T4500 processor though) and would ultimately like to get the exact same setup! Thanks!

to lay it all out quickly:

kernel - the core of an OS

kext - similar to a driver, stands for Kernel EXTension, helps the system to recoqnise hardware etc

chameleon - a bootloader, we (this community) uses it to boot/multiboot OSes, an alternative (kinda) is PC EFI by netkas

anything else?
