Looking for some help on how to get me up to 10.6.3 with Asus p6t Non Deluxe. I have done multiple installs of 10.6 but cannot seem to get up to 10.6.2 or 10.6.3. I have followed a few guides that did not work for me.

Please Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

I can get the basic install done USB Method to 10.6 with the Asus p6t essentials package.

I then followed a few guides to upgrade.

1. Downloaded the combo update from apple 10.6.3

2. Try creating a UUID with Kext Utility.

3. Intall the 10.6.3

4. Replace UUID in the com.apple.plist

5. Replace out some of the kexts and reboot. (Remove Sleep Enabler)

6. Reboot.

Thats what other guides I have followed instruct let me know.

So you can boot into 10.6 OK, but when you try to install 10.6.3 update then your system hangs. Correct?

Does it freeze with a message, hang on the timing grey circle, on the beach ball, on the desktop or what?

Have you done a -v boot? Post a screenshot of that by taking a photo.

Are you booting using AHCI? That message means the system is not recognising your SATA drives.

Using Sata drives i have a couple installs maby I should disable the other drive when i boot. I don't think thats it though. You point me to a good guide for the install to 10.6.3

Def not that works fine with 10.6 every time I try the update to 10.6.3 it won't boot to the os.

What are the KEXTS your using to update to 10.6.3? What method did you follow for the the update?

Can I be clear.

1) You can boot into 10.6 OK from your HD. The GUI works fine and you have no problems.

2) When you run the 10.6.3 update, your system hangs with a 'waiting for root device' at boot-up.

Is that correct?

Yeah It was the setting to IDE mode that was messing it up. I Changed it in the BIOS and worked. Now Time to redo a fresh install for my main system.

I will post the way I do it after its complete.

Hey Chris (and all)- I'm in exactly the same boat as you were in. I've got an ASUS P6T and I'm working great in v 10.6.0. The ONLY thing that I could find that didn't work was- if I let it go to sleep it won't wake up (fixed with a power settings change). Of course I've tried the upgrade with no success and another half hour of work to get back where I was. (The Time Machine doesn't work either. I tried restoring from an external drive that I'd used for backup and it went through 100% and started reading "604873 hours remaining" and went up to 130% and quit... weird.. Then no more bootloader on the HD..) Anyway- I have tried looking for the "step by step guide" for updating from 10.6.0 to 10.6.3 on a plain jane P6T board (no Deluxe or SE) with no luck. I actually had the problem you had in the beginning with OSX not seeing my HD until I set it AHCI.

When I upgrade and reboot (not verbose) I get the grey "screen of death" (apple logo and windmill busy cursor- and boot verbose messages coming THROUGH the splash!)

So I just wonder what ACTUALLY HAPPENS when I update. What's getting changed in the boot sequence and kexts to make it no longer boot? Do I replace the kexts with the same ones after upgrade or do I have to get newly developed kexts for each version of OSX?

I've been working with OSX for 3 days so I'm a noob. This might be an awkward way to come on board- might get some "search the boards before making a dumb question post like this..." and for that I'm sorry.

It's similar to working with Linux in some ways but not really! :)

Thanks for any help

Don't know why I do this but the 2 most annoying things on this forum are noobs asking about:

1) waiting for root device, and

2) why doesn't my 10.6.3 upgrade work.

The reason why this is so annoying is because the answer is almost always 1) ensure that AHCI is set in BIOS, and 2) delete sleepenabler. Both of these answers can easily be found by doing a simple search here.

I did both

It was easy to find, thanks

Still no joy

OK, but you haven't posted any details on the kp.

So, if it's not the usual sleepenabler issue, what error are you getting? Post a pic so that someone can help.

Yes- some information would help wouldn't it?

i7-920

ASUS P6T (plain jane)

HD 4850 (using safemode in install and first boot)

On my latest attempts it's boot-looping within 5 seconds of leaving the bootloader. Auto reset. Nothing on the screen long enough to take a picture.

OK- AHCI of course- I can't even SEE the drive from installation if it's IDE- so I got that right.

Sleepenabler isn't on either of the 2 locations it is supposed to be in. I even tried ADDING it THEN deleting it. Fail.

Somebody said somewhere something about you gotta have less than 4 GB ram and jerk out every other HD and have the OSX drive at the SATA 1 loctation. Check

Of course I downloaded the upgrade. Check

Tried typing busratio=20 (i7 920)

I've even started playing with #####- maybe it'll catch what I'm missing. Not worked on 3 attempts with it so far.

I pretty much followed the thumbdrive installation guide (found in these forums for the P6T SE- only I used the folder of files for MY motherboard like I'm supposed to)and all of my new toys (the downloaded upgrade, kext utility, the folder of kexts for my motherboard some other guy used for the upgrade, video driver, #####, etc.) are on that thumb.

10.6.0 works GREAT!

Any ideas?
