intel has released their Westmere EP xeon processors, and there should be a mac pro update coming soon using these 5600 series chips.

question is, when will they be released and when will we see new boards from supermicro/tyan/etc?

these processors are going to be pretty expensive if you want the 6-core ones but there are quad core offerings that might allow us to build (relatively) cheap hack pros. take a look at the pricing & specs:

CPU model Frequency Intel Smart Cache TDP Cores / Threads 1kU Price (US$)

Intel Xeon X5680 3.33GHz 12 MB 130W 6/12 1663

Intel Xeon X5677 3.46GHz 12 MB 130W 4/8 1663

Intel Xeon W3680 3.33GHz 12 MB 130W 6/12 999

Intel Xeon X5670 2.93GHz 12 MB 95W 6/12 1440

Intel Xeon X5667 3.06GHz 12 MB 95W 4/8 1440

Intel Xeon X5660 2.80GHz 12 MB 95W 6/12 1219

Intel Xeon X5650 2.66GHz 12 MB 95W 6/12 996

Intel Xeon E5640 2.66GHz 12 MB 80W 4/8 774

Intel Xeon E5630 2.53GHz 12 MB 80W 4/8 551

Intel Xeon E5620 2.40GHz 12 MB 80W 4/8 387

Intel Xeon L5640 2.26GHz 12 MB 60W 6/12 996

Intel Xeon L5630 2.13GHz 12 MB 40W 4/8 551

Intel Xeon L5609 1.86GHz 12 MB 40W 4/4 440

Intel Xeon E5645 2.40GHz 12 MB 80W 6/12 958

Intel Xeon L5638 2.00GHz 12 MB 60W 6/12 958

Intel Xeon L5618 1.86GHz 12 MB 40W 4/8 530

some of these chips are already showing up online, the E5620 is around $400 and could be a nice candidate for a lower cost dual rig.

theres also the 3600, the W3680 is a 3.33 GHz 12MB 130 W chip that is $999. i suspect apple will use this in a single processor low end model.

what about beckton?

i'm also very interested in the AMD Opteron 6000 and whether these will be able to run in snow leopard

The Magny Cours and Lisbon server parts will be released in 2010. The Magny Cours part will come in 8 to 12 cores and the Lisbon part will come in 4 and 6 core parts. Magny Cours is focused on performance while the Lisbon part is focused on high performance per watt. Magny Cours is an MCM (Multi-Chip Module) with two hexa-core "Istanbul" Opteron parts. This will use a new G34 socket for dual and quad socket processors and thus will be marketed as Opteron 61xx series processors. Lisbon uses C32 socket certified for dual socket use or single socket use only and thus will be marketed as Opteron 41xx processors. Both will be built on a 45 nm SOI process.

no thoughts?

apple is late to the game as these chips are already shipping and PC manufacturers already have workstations sporting them. WWDC is june 7-11 so i guess we'll see new mac pros then. case redesign anyone?

i'm debating going with a dual E5620 or dropping one of those 6-core in an X58 mobo. the 6-core chips are W3680 (basically xeon version of 980X, only 1 QPI link), E5645, X5650, X5660, X5670, X5680, L5638, L5640.

there's also rumors about apple using AMD chips

Hello, I have 2 Xeon e5620 on my serverboard S5520HC Intel.

Is possible to install Snow Leopard?

Let me know

Thanx

that's what i'd like to know as well. no one has tried yet so we dont know and will probably have to wait for apple to release the new mac pros (i.e. OS update). the current macslows are 400 something days old and HP/dell already have workstations with the xeon 5600 shipping. id actually consider purchasing a new mac pro depending on the price/specs/whether there is a new case design but apple is holding me hostage since i dont know what they are doing. seems like they dont care about pro users now and are more concerned with the gadgets. im also hoping that the radeon 5000 series gets support.

 • 4 weeks later...
My 2 cents opinion is that Apple doesn't give a damn to workstations anymore. Mobile devices come first.

sadly you are right

no new mac pros at WWDC, its all about the iphone. world wide developers conference.......so you are telling me the people there are all developing iphone apps? apple only cares about gadgets, they are apple inc not apple computer.

this is a slap in the face to people like me. i work in audio and have been patiently waiting for the mac pros to come out. the current ones are well over a year old and outdated/overpriced. xeon 5600s are available and shipping in systems from PC manufacturers. we have no clue whether a new mac pro is coming out or if one ever will so we cant plan our purchase.

gigibatt- you should be able to run SL. i dont know the hardware details of that intel board but most of it should work. search around to see if anyone is using that board or look at the super micro posts. a retail install might work with a couple patches. i am interested in a dual 5620 setup so i'm interested to see if you get it running.

hello!

Sorry for my delay.....

Ok, my board work very well...now I need a solution for my two 82575EB Lan ports...have You a help for me?

 • 2 weeks later...

good news. what install method did you use? would you mind running some benchmarks like geekbench, cinebench, and xbench?

as for the LAN, i searched around to see if i could find a solution but had no luck. hope you can get it working.

i'm looking to build a dual E5620 using either a supermicro X8DAH+ or evga SR-2 (if it works and theres a chassis that will fit it)

i have SUPERMICRO X8DAi with 2 x Six core Xeons !!

works great and been using it for over a month

My Config

- Supermicro X8DAi

- 12 GB Memory

- 2x 3.3 Xeon X5680 ( 12 Cores Monster 24 HT ) both work great

- Snow 10.6.3 Upgraded to 10.6.4

- 120 OCZ SSD - super fast getting over 240-270 read/write + 1TB WD Black Caviar for data (about 120 MB/s read speed )

- GTX 285 EVGA ( Initially i used EVGA 9800GT to get it started ) 470GTX not fully working yet but it would be great !!!!

- Supermicro 680 Watt power supply

- DVD Rom + Bluray burner

everything work out of the box with Vanilla Kernel using Tonymacx86 ##### + ##### 2.1.1

make sure you choose MacPro smbios and check if it has macpro 3,1 for best video performance ( opengl bench gtx285 was about 4500 with macpro 4,1 or imac i was getting only 540 opengl bench )

i needed a superfast rig for video and FCP Compressor as well as CS5 Maxes Out all cores !!! and 3D apps just love my new baby

hope that helps a little ....

Hey Spawndood.

I have looked everywhere for your MOBo, and I cant find anything with that model number.

can you be more specific?

Does it have PCIe 2.0 x16?

do you have all cores working, do you have sound, could you elaborate?

a complete list of parts and devices on your system + a little more detailed instal method would be EL AWESOME!

thanks in advance...

here is the link to the motherboard SUPERMICRO i used

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherb.../5500/X8DAi.cfm

yes it has 2x PCIe 2.0 x16

all cores are working ( tested wit Cinebench 11.5 ) all maxed out

all components are listed in the post above

here is the memory i used x 2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220394

instruction is easy

you need to download iBood Supported Disk from Tonymacx86

boot from it

then pop in a retail or upgrade Snow Leopard

follow the osx installation

after its done it will reboot

reboot using ##### Supported CD (same that you installed it with )

then install ##### on the drive you installed the osx (and choose the choices from my screen shoot ) if you have the same config like mine

then reboot and you done

if you have any other problems let me know..

*** JUST MAKE SURE YOUR hard drive in BIOS IS SET TO - AHCI - ****

post-20966-1280701222_thumb.png

damn thats an awesome (and expensive!) rig. no way i can afford dual 6 cores so im gonna have to go with an 8 core setup

this is the setup i am thinking of:

2 x E5620s

EVGA SR-2

GeForce GTX 460

12GB RAM

2 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDs

smaller SSD for OS boot drive (probably later)

yes a little pricey but still much cheaper then the HIGH END MAC PRO config from apple store . Awaiting the new prices for new Mac Pros 12 Core same configuration i have to compare ... in few days i will find out :) how much i saved :)

Evga Mobo looks great !!! i like it

just be careful with NVIDIA GTX460 i had GTX470 and replaced it with GTX285 for now to have full OSX support and Hardware Support in CS5

you will have to do 2 things to get gtx460 to work

- install osx using some older video card like 9800gt or something that is tested and working out of the box then install the new beta kexts for gtx 460

or

- install osx on drive ( external drive ) using a real mac then update to the latest osx and install the right kext for gtx460 ( this way you don't need another video card )

Glad to hear that with Supermicro there wasnt a problem. I start thinking to change my mobo :)

Yep, I heard that there are a lot of problems with Fermi videos. Even 470/480 chips though have support in 10.6.4 still do not show such perfomance as 285 does. I think Fermi support is still too raw now. Looking forward for the next updates.

unfortunately i do not know how to edit DSDT files.. and that would resolve my few issues i have.

- Sleep

- Speedstep ( i have to use smbios Macpro3.1 instead 4.1 to have a full speed ) :( waithing for a new fixes from new Mac Pro 12 core to match mine

- ICH10 Raid support....- cant get that to work :censored2: have to use achi but i heard it cant be fixed in DSDT file

otherwise everything is working..

has anyone got the EVGA SR-2 working? i really need to know and there is no info out there on whether this board works

if i can get a deal on them i may use 2 L5640s.....they are the lower power 6 cores and lower clocked/lower multi but might be able to get a good price

 • 1 month later...

thanks to spawntastic help !!

i bought nearly the same hardware, and i was really surprised,

that it works better than all the other supported hardware i built in the past.

i started to do everything like spawn posted 01 aug (##### etc)

(place network kexts to S/L/E)

with my nvidia quadro fx380 it started out of the box !!

later i removed the the NullCPU kext and the LegacyAppleRTC kext

because geekbench results gave me 1000 more and the microtec cpu cooler

is strong enough to keep the xeon under 50 celsius.

now i installed everything for my ATI 5770 (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=205802&view=findpost&p=1546077)

now everything works fine except the sleep mode.

after i changed the boot file to "baboon" it works !

the hole procedure costs me 3 hours and now it is 100% like a mac !!

here you can find all necessary files

hmm thats strange an i7 running @ 4ghz can get a Geek score of 13000+ and a New Mac Pro tops out @ a score of 21000 so you might want to look into that. Not that your Geek score is bad

Yes, I'm aware your not overclocked Im just pointing out that efficiency. My geek score was low and it was do to nullCPUPowerManagement.

Took me awhile to figure out why kept getting stock scores of an unclocked CPU....

I'm just pointing out if better performance is attainable even under stock clock cycle's.

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and to Hackintosh.

First my system, very similar.

Supermicro X8DAE - 2x Xeon Westmere 2.4 Ghz - 16 GB Ram - ATI HD 5570 1 Gb.

I've just tried a first install, following Spawn advice as you did.

It worked quite fine, except that :

- ATI card couldn't show any other resolution than 1024x768 and

- some restarts show a bad CMOS problem message when starting BIOS and system doesn't boot.

Could you help?

Maybe you've got other suggestion to have the whole system working very fine, since you have a very very similar sys.

Thanx in advance.

P.
