joshier
I'm interested in backing up my whole HD to another one so that if my HD goes down, I'll just boot off the other one. Is this possible with Carbon Copy Cloner? If so, it might be a good reason to put it in an FAQ so other users don't end up having to re-do it all. Cheers. srs5694
Yes, Carbon Copy Cloner is good for this, with one caveat: It won't back up your OSx86 boot loader. If your plan is to physically yank out a bad drive and physically install a new one, you'll need some other boot loader (on a CD-R, for instance) to get the system booted. This can be remedied, either before or after a disaster, by re-installing your boot loader of preference. If the disaster takes the form of a software failure (a system rendered unbootable by a system software update or damaged OS X filesystem, say), you'll probably be able to add the backup drive and boot from it using your original install's boot loader. thebigdog123
Check out SuperDuper. Will clone everything including boot loader. You can also schedule smart updates later, it will just copy/delete just what it needs without redoing the entire backup so you always have a clean image. If you do need to resort to backup, literally all you have to do is boot from the backup, it works without having to do a single thing! semipro
SuperDuper! has been my favourite for a long time and my backup for SL worked the first time perfectly. The great thing about it is, that you can smart backup your harddrive which will only copy modified files to the backup drive. I have one backup partition on my secondary Harddrive for my SSD main install drive and I can test out new settings there perfectly without having to worry if I get some Kernel Panic. I will just log into the main install and reverse the changes. Highly recommended tool and the price is very reasonable for what it achieves. Frequent updates (free!) too...
