I have heard of people installing OS X from hard disk partitions (that's basically all that installing from a USB flash drive is), but I don't have a pointer to a step-by-step guide.

Concerning your partitions, my understanding is that it's very hard to get OS X to install to a primary partition. You may need to convert one of your primaries to a logical or use a hybrid MBR setup -- a GUID Partition Table (GPT) configuration with a modified protective MBR that contains up to three MBR partitions. OS X and Linux are both quite happy to reside on GPT partitions; the most common reason for using MBR today is Windows, which can't boot from a GPT disk except on EFI-based computers. Assuming you've got just one or two Windows versions, a hybrid MBR's three partitions should be adequate. Hybrid MBRs are flaky and dangerous, though; see my Web page on the topic for details.
