I am attempting to replace a Nvidia card in my friend's hackintosh with a ATI 4850 (dual-dvi) and have hit a wall. The card in question is an Asus EAH4850/HTDI/512M, the single slot one with reference-style cooler (and a pretty graphic of a female asian archer surrounded by cherry blossoms)

The hack in question is a vanilla retail 10.6.2 install with bootloader on USB stick which was using nothing more than graphicsenabler=yes for video beforehand.

I have no problem getting it to boot without res switch/QI/CE using -x, but nothing else works

Thus far I've tried:

Chameleon RC3 w graphicsenabler=yes = kernel panic, (ATIx2000)

Chameleon RC3 w graphicsenabler=yes & legacyati4800.kext = kernel panic (ATIx2000)

PC-EFI 10.6 w graphicsenabler=yes = garbled video

PC-EFI 10.6 w graphicsenabler=yes and legacyati4800.kext = garbled video

Chameleon pre-RC5 pkg from Tonymac w graphicsenabler=yes and legacyati4800.kext =garbled video

aserebln's RC4/PC-EFI 10.5 based loader w graphicsenabler=yes and legacyati4800.kext =garbled video

all of the above with removed ATI4500 & ATI4600Controller.kext, same results

and I tried something with EVOenabler in /E/E with a few diff bootloaders, unsure which, same results.

any suggestions? Have I missed something obvious?

The bulk of the other methods I see predate snow leopard by a good 6-8 months, so am unsure what to try next.

I'm trying to fix it without swapping back in the old card and taking the 4850 home to my hack for further troubleshooting, but thus far its not looking promising.

Hey there, this is a link to some files from netkas that I used to get my 4670 working with very minimal work, I am running dual screens and have qe/ci working great.

EDIT: these files are meant for 10.6.2

I used the 4600 kext and graphicsenabler=yes and I'm pretty certain that is it. I had tried a bunch of other things like you had done, and none of it worked so i just reinstalled with the above files and it was golden. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, however everything I've read leads me to believe that the 46x0 cards require a different set of drivers than the 48x0 series, and the 4850 in particular.

I'm really trying for a near-retail install if at all possible, but it seems all the methods I've found that I've yet to try require patched kexts and/or removal of all sorts of stuff from S/L/E/

I mean... that'd be fine if its required, but I'm hoping for something less invasive

Ihad similar problems, Try booting from CD with ##### ATI. If it doesn't boot, type PCIRootUID=1 at the boot screen.

arch=i386

these files are for the leopard, but run on Snow 32

64 use graphicsenabler/pciroot + legacyati4800controller.kext
