Hey All,

Not 100% sure this is where I should as but, I've got a bit of an annoying situation. I recently built my Hack and everything is up and running great, but there is one thing that happens that bugs me. I have a Liteon iHas124-04 Dvd drive, it works great burns and reads flawlessly.

The issue I'm having is when the computer sits idle (or mostly idle) the drive randomly polls the drive. It sounds like its checking to see if there is a disc in it. I've been checking over the boards and wasn't able to find anything relevant. My setup is down in my sig. All in all Im more worried about the drive dying prematurely since its polling itself so much (the stopping and starting is what I'm really caring about).

Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know of a fix or a cause? I'll list my kexts incase that matters, also I'm still a noob in the hackintosh realm, any advice is welcome ;)

My Kexts:

AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext

EvOreboot.kext

fakesmc.kext

IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext

JMicronATA.kext

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext

PlatformUUID.kext

SleepEnabler.kext

HDAEnabler.kext

LegacyHDA.kext

RealtekR1000SL.kext

I m having same exact problem with my Lite ON Super DVD drive. I got Retail Installation on machine updated to 10.6.1. After fresh installation it wasn't working for that i installed APPLEVIAATA.kext. It works perfectly fine with every DVD writing and reading but this random polling is annoying, will it effect its performance? If anybody has a solution please post.

I think this is just a Mac-thing, I've had it with every Hackintosh I've owned. It isn't noticeable on my current Hack Pro though, I assume because the drive is quieter maybe? I can't remember the model number off the top of my head, but next time I'm at my hackintosh I'll let you know. Its a newer SATA Lite-On model, so it should be similar to any other. I'm not sure if there is any way to actually stop the polling though; if you find anything out about it let us know.

WEll I found out that my sata ports will work without the Jmicron kext that seems to have reduced the frequency of the pooling quite a bit, if not eliminated it completely. Don't really know if that helps you guys but it seems to have helped me.

I use a Plextor DVDR RX-880SA which is basically the same drive, both drives yours and mine are made by Plextor. I have the same problem and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it for months.

I run Ubuntu as well as the SL and not a problem when booting Ubuntu. Which leads me to suspect it's an OS thing and not hardware.

Anyhow, the drive will start clunkering every now and than if I don't use the computer for awhile. Than when the screen saver kicks in the rate increase. While in this condition the computer will not go into sleep mode only if I force it. I noticed the firmware is old and I had to pull the drive out in order to update it with the latest (can only be done under windows). Surprise, surprise: machine switched to sleep mode by itself...

So the question is to those who has their machine running 10.6.2 and that the machine switches to sleep mode successfully, can you list your DVD drive make and model? do you see these drive poling on the activity LED?

Thanks

Hello!

I have Acer Aspire 5730ZG laptop with internal HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N attached on Intel ICH9M/M-E SATA AHCI Controller, and i have the same problem. OSX 10.6.2 checks the drive in every 1-2 min, but i don't know why.

In the login items i was have Crossover CD helper, i deleted, now i checks not so frequently, but it is annoying because lot of times i use it from battery, and this useless drive-checks eat my battery power :( And yes, i see the activity-LED is blinking.

Here is my ioreg: http://pastebin.com/TxMxh3sA

And here is my kexts: http://pastebin.com/dJBdELbN

If somebody have idea, please tell it us.

Bye!

Replaced the Plextor drive with a PIONEER DVR-218L and all is working as expacted. No more light blinking, no more noise and the machine goes to deep sleep by itself. Anyone interested in a brand new Plextor DVD drive?
