zeigerpuppy
Nobody knows? I have been looking into this very question. Seems that the cards are very similar performance and price-wise. They have some differences however: GTX 285 1GB - avoid 2GB version, final cut pro doesn't like it see http://netkas.org/?p=105 - slight edge in benchmarks - have been reports of these burning out, EVGA gives full guarantee which may be something to consider - has CUDA for using GPU for processing (very few apps use this but is considered by some to be better than OpenCL) - problems with dual display (not sure if solved yet) - Has SLI, but no support in OS X (yet) Radeon 4890 1GB - dual dvi edition (make sure not to get DVI/HDMI edition) http://netkas.org/?p=212 - both displays work with appropriate driver - some people have had problems with fans running full speed - easier to install? - some say better quality components - runs cooler - crossfire support but no benefit in OS X (yet) If anyone has updated information or notices inaccuracies, please let me know. I haven't got either card yet.... so advice appreciated There is no compatibility list that I found yet, may be a good place to start it.... so far I have been able to glean the following, please post here and we can update the list. Radeon 4890 models sapphire ?no 60Hz displays asus? msi - fan running at full speed bu dual display ok xfx - fan problem HIS - fan problem Club3D Radeon HD 4890 -fan ok Powercolor 1GB, model AX4890 1GBD5-UH OK Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/209356-gtx-285-or-ati-4890/#findComment-1413884 Share on other sites
mdnz01
ATI fanboy? - both displays work with appropriate driver - ok - some people have had problems with fans running full speed - easier to install? - both use PCI express so no - some say better quality components - nobody knows, very doubtful for cards in this price reagon - runs cooler - Nope, GTX 285 downclocks for an idle temperature of around 40 degrees celsius, 4890 idles at around 58-60 - crossfire support but no benefit in OS X (yet) - No idea. If you want a faster performing card get the GTX 285, want to look more after your budget get the 4890.
