tanlouis
Hey everyone, I'm very new to this Hackintosh thing. I was wondering whether any of you "Gurus" can tell me whether its safe for me to pick up this PC off of Ebay. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260543695322) A few questions: 1) Do hackintoshes run EXACTLY like a Mac? 2) Are they known to perform better or worse? 3) Are they as stable as a normal Mac Pro? 4) What are the known compatibility issues with a Hackintosh? I read that there's sleep etc issues on the forum. I've spent endless hours reading the forum, and I just like to know whether its safe to run my only PC on a hackintosh. From what I understand, Psystar has an injunction...do they still support the computers they sold? Thank you! Scottapotamas
2. I heard that future updates will break the operating system. Short answer: No. Our system supports all future updates, and you will not run into any problems. You have our guarantee or all your money back, AND we'll give you a backrub. That is false... they have no idea if a future update will break the computer... Now to answer the questions... 1. They run damn simmilar. some have problems with compatibility, but most are great, and lots work better than the original product... In short, maybe... I don't know what mobo etc are in it, which makes it damn impossible to tell... it is not a real mac though... 2. Depends on the hardware... Obviously a faster processor will be faster etc... as "perform" can be interpreted differerntly, maybe... 3. As stable, probably... but not certain as i don;t know what is in it... Another issues is it comes with nothing preinstalled... You would need to install it by yourself or with their help??? Someones install may be more stable than someone elses... ill answer the rest later... 4. Known issues??? There are some people who have everything running perfectly, but there aren;t that many... most people have little issues that dont bother us, some people may not have sleep, (most people wont have sleep) some may lack the system info... cosmetic issue, but not perfect none the less... some have usb issues sound issues, graphics issues... basically issues with everything... That probably wont happen as it looks like they are selling a setup that they have tested and works for them... Safety??? No one running osx on a computer has been sued or anything, only people selling them who break the EULA agreement... That said, some installs stop working for no reason, or after an update etc... So in all... I wouldn;t, i would get a parts list and make a computer that i knew works... As you don;t know the actual specs of the machine that could be difficult... I may be a little negative and oppressive in my statements, but instead of saying... yeah, should work, i like letting people know all options and potential problems. P.S. Ignore the compatible with windows7 red hat etc {censored}... Almost all machines will run windows. most machines will run linux out of the box also... EDIT... After looking at the video with some scrutiny, its motherboard is a gigabyte EP45-UD??? Which i would say is a UD3LR or UD3P... They are pretty compatible, but still not perfect... Many people are running them and main issues are sleep Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/209059-help-wtb-mac-compatible-pc-on-ebay/#findComment-1396191 Share on other sites
tanlouis
Hey Scott, Thanks for your reply. it really helped a lot. Just to summarize, 1 - Hackintoshes CAN run better than MACs, if the right board/parts are chosen 2 - Hardware dependent 3 - I contacted the guy, he said that they provide a pre-install cd that streamlines the installation to "fully working order" 4 - They've probably tested their setup and it wont run into usb/graphics/etc problems. No one has gotten sued for running OSX on PC hardware (yet!), and you wouldn't get it because you'd get your own parts. Thanks for all the help. I'm going to send them an e-mail or call them and try to address these issues. p.s - You said the EP45 board has some issues...if I were to take the best most compatible board out there, which one would that be? p.s.s - I just re-read the Ebay auction, and they said they will post up a video showing the functionality of Sleep etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/209059-help-wtb-mac-compatible-pc-on-ebay/#findComment-1396542 Share on other sites
Scottapotamas
ok great... not sure what they mean about the cd... probably just boots the disk then lets you install, boot from the disk and then open a package on the disk to install the bootloader... Their posting suddenly disappeared I remembered their name though, mazimumsales. I wonder whether they got in trouble with Apple.... They did say it was just a "MAC Compatible PC" and said it didn't come pre-installed....so i dunno. You were right, they did take it down. Their new listing seems a whole lot more careful (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260545589864) as if they got nipped on their ass It says they support RAID. Is that an external or internal RAID card? I'm planning to get a system up and running by next week, so i'm going to either go with these guys or Neweggggg! Thanks again Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/209059-help-wtb-mac-compatible-pc-on-ebay/#findComment-1399462 Share on other sites
Scottapotamas
I would newegg... it probably won't have a raid card. the ep45 series have variants that support on board raid... the UD3R,L,P are examples of this...
