miohn
Tried 3 different tutorials for getting HD4890 to work with my MacPro. Last, after completly reinstalling SL and updates, was from amit talking "three easy steps" But even the first step did't work. The "pkg-installer" reported an error. Still black screens when I slot in my Club HD4890! Even if I connect only one monitor to the DVI and vice versa ......... I will use the card for my gaming PC and have to stay with the working Mac Edition HD3870 because I don't get any help here in this forum. No replies to one of my posts depending this problem. Anyway thanks Mike Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208567-i-give-up/ Share on other sites
Alex HQuest
If you ever wanted a plug and play ATi video card, you should either 1) stick with Windows (which I guess you will be from now on), 2) get an officially supported video card (ie, 4850) or 3) get a real Mac hardware. Otherwise, you will face lots of "Chamäleon" (Chameleon), "cashing" (cacheing) and other nonsense terms missed from Windows users' dictionary. Be prepared to read a lot of "chinese", as plenty of guides are wrote by people where English are not their native language. In your case, I would suggest taking a breath and a cup or two of coffee, and try to better understand what is the status for your particular 4890 card. Chameleon is an OS boot loader, known mostly on "Mac on non Mac hardware" community. There are a couple guides easely found on Google about how to install it on your system. You can even install an "outdated" version and then upgrade it by copying a single file, there is no need of a Spaceship Science PhD knowledge for that. Same as for your card, people did some handy installers which are quite "Windows-like": Next, Next, Finish. They also add some notes, stating what else you need, so people can play the puzzle and come back with better solutions for their own issues. If even these are not enough for you, then you are on the same boat of many of us. It took me a long time until I figured out why my screen was always black. Turned out my SL cannot use any 60Hz based resolution. It sucks but I can work at lower resolutions. And I discovered this by accident. Maybe if I had searched better, I could had find this before, as this issue was first reported long ago. Anyway, if you are just waiting for an instant "Dumber's Guide for miohn's 4890 SuperClocked Edition, English version", then please use the [X] button on right top of your browser, and get back to your favorite game. We are busy researching to create dumb guides for dumb people. Try again in a few months. Don't get me wrong, but we are in here to help, not to work for anyone. Or go buy... nevermind, they lose on Court Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208567-i-give-up/#findComment-1393997 Share on other sites
miohn
Hi Alex, first thanks very much for your comment! I am aware, that no one has been waiting for "me" to make a beginners tutorial on how to install "my" special card on "my" MacPro. O.k. would be nice anyway ...! I've become "greedy" when I discovered a contribution that it is possibly to install a better performing HD4890 for 160,- Euros instead of a "Mac compatible" Card with less Power for 315,- Euro. All posts promised, that it is so easy to manage! And I am very impatient person from nature. (Btw I am working on a MacPro 3.1 early 2008 with Win 7 installed on a second drive. There are still some 3D-Apps not working on OSX so I always boot Win7 and work in that environment. This Graphic-Card-Uptade is not ment for gaming) I think, my problem is, that I found too many different methods on the web and tried them all out as far as I was able to understand, what to do. And I was getting more and more impatient because it is not working. So please forgive my! And know, it seems, that is is not working, because I cannot install a "pkg"-File and get an error after the installer finished. This seems to be a simple and only aOSX related problem. How to get a "pkg-File" properly installed? The issue with 60Hz what you have said before could really be the problem that all monitors are staying black. But for this case I don't know, how to boot with an other resolution. I'm not fit in OSX. Anyway! I thank you for your patience! Alex HQuest
Wait a second. If I got you right, you are do using a real MacPro hardware, and not an "OSX on generic Intel" hardware. Is that right? If yes, then things are in a very different picture. You should NOT even think of installing Chameleon on your disk, or data loss will happen. My best advice would be to "flash" your card with a Mac BIOS, however I am unsure if this 4890 serie is available for Mac. The way hardware is initialised on OSX is different from our regular Intel PCs -- that's why we do use "Chameleon" and other kext's (most of them are plain EFI emulators -- suggest you to take a read on what is EFI to better understand the whole picture). Someone which would be able to give a great word of advice -- IMHO -- is netkas. He is usually on the board, but I am unsure if he would even read this thread, but you may try ask for his help on his site netkas.org. Your request is very though, and I guess less than 2% of people on this forum would be able to help you. This is another reason to take a breath and give some time. miohn
Hi Alex, that's right! I use a MacPro hardware (but working with Win 7) I'm now at the point, I think that I have to flash the Card. Also to be able to boot between OSX and Win7 via Bootcamp. I already found a Flashtool and some Roms which maybe could work and followed the tutorial as far as ... But ..... I cannot flash anythink when I only see a black screen. Thats my problem at the moment Will try to post on netcas-site as well. thanks Mike Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208567-i-give-up/#findComment-1396232 Share on other sites
