So i was going to install OSX on my desktop, but i couldnt get any information as to which install would support all my hardware for even one of my computers.

So i have an idea.

I have like ....100 of those USB sticks, roughly between 4 and 16GBs. IS IT POSSIBLE to create a live usb key install of the OSx86 versions to speed up hardware testing? For example, i create a few live versions, and then run around and test it on multiple computers (since theres no install) thus mass creating compatibility lists. I have a few high end computers, along with a few notebooks, most of which the hardware is generally unknown, or only pieces are known to work with a few installs. not only that, i have tons of friends with multiple PCs that i could test their hardware also. Put that together with the communitys friends, and their friends friends and etc etc. You could almost do a mass sortve...beta test that more people would participate in.

Its just an idea, but do you think its possible? and if so, can someone direct me as to exactly how?

Heres my thoughts:

Buy the dvd of each edition, and then mount as iso. edit the dvd to include the basic setups for osx86.

then run osx on a working install, and do this:: http://blog.bradbergeron.com/2006/11/howto...-a-flash-drive/

think it would work?

there's yet a live version. have you searched for it? why don't you post your hw specs?

I did do some google searching, and that weblink is all i was able to find, but it was made for osx on mac installs. If you know of one, can you point me in the right direction? project name, etc?

My hardware:

eVGA x58 SLi Motherboard

Corsair Dominator 6GB 1866 Memory

Intel I7 975 EX CPU

eVGA Nvidia 285 2GB Graphics Card

D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCIe Wireless NIC

3rd HDD SATA 40GB 2.5 somethin or other.

But the reason the USB interests me is because i could do tests on my other PCs, or have a single enviroment for all my PCs like i have for my Kubuntu setup. i just...kinda take my whole PC in my pocket. any PC i plug it into works just like the other. cool trick, and excellent for HW testing.

if i can do that, ill use a Toshiba 16GB USB Flash Drive.

by the way, windows has a driver database, so it keeps drivers it doesnt use. Couldnt you just create a pack with ALL the kexts and install the ones you might need...like windows?

Also, figured id mention i just picked up a copy of Snow Leopard from the apple store, amazing that a whole operating system only cost 29.99.

Plan is to try and get a stable version working off HDD, then attempt the pacifist trick and modify USB install as needed.
