(Pretty Newbee to Hackintosh...)

Hi. I have some server Mainboards that uses opteron Dual core 200 series and also some that uses Dual and Quad core 2000 series... These are Arima, Tyan and Supermicro Boards. The chipsets are not that common, and I didn't found any info abou drivers for these chipsets Here is the info on some of those boards I own:

These boards was given to me, so it would be really nice if I could get OSX running on these. That would mean cheap Hackintoshes! i just neet to get some more processors for those. It runs Windows and Linux flawlessly! Also, on some of these I can get eight Cores installed!!! That's up to a real Mac Pro (only with AMD opteron instead)!

Any info on drivers and installers would be fine. My internet connection isn't fast, so I would like to know what should I download. I've heard that iAtkos v7 and PhenomLawLess is a good start. Buit would these work for Opteron processors and these strange chipsets below? :

- AMD® 8111™ [HyperTransport I/O Hub] - AMD® 8131™ [PCI-X Tunnel]

- nVidia nForce Professional 3400 (MCP55V Pro)

- Winbond Super I/O W83627EHG

- nVidia nForce® Professional 3600 MCP (MCP55-Pro)

- NEC uPD720404 PCI-E to PCI-X bridge (optional)

- Super I/O Winbond W83627EHG

- ServerWorks™ HT2000 + HT1000

- Super I/O NS PC87417

Chipset

- ServerWorks™ HT2000 + HT1000

Any info/ideas are welcome. Thanks guys!

Thanks, but any idea what kind of installation route to go? Should I simply try and install a distro like LawlessPhenomPPC or maybe iAtkos or should I go the Retail/Vanilla with patching route (I know that would be much more complicated...)?

  • 3 weeks later...

So far I've done three Opteron Hackintoshes, 1 Leopard, 2 Snow Leopard.

Good news, bad news, bad first:

I have not been able to use the Arima 2XX series boards, I have two flavors, neither works. Of course they don't work for Windows 7 either. It looks like an ACPI issue, I tried EVERY setting including enabling the parallel port. I also tried a SuperMicro H8DAR-I with the same results.

I've installed XP and Linux on these boards without an issue but Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are a no-go.

The one board I have had great success with is the ASUS K8N-DRE boards from geeks.com. They're cheap, $13-$19 right now.

The on-board video works but I don't use it. I installed a cheap Nvidia GeForce 8400 PCI-EXP video card and a Soundblaster Live! card. The Nvidea works fine but the Soundblaster requires a kext that I found on the net.

I used the Hazard distro with modbin kernel, 10.6, NO UPGRADES. Upgrades will crash the system.

So far I have only been able to run in 32 bit mode with only one processor. I have a matched pair of 285s that work great for the install but kill the machine on boot. I'll update when I get a fix for either issue.

Oh, these boards are LARGE, they won't fit in a standard PC case without mods. I'll post my mods later. The easiest case to install these boards in is an old Dell with the removable CD ROM cage. They haven't made them for years but there are plenty around. I get mine for nothing at the dump, er recycling center.

Thanks! The K8N-DRE hint is a good one. I'll get some of these boards.

But I have had some progress. I got a new 1U rack server with the Tyan motherboard K8SR. These came with 4Gb of RAM and two dual core opteron 270 CPUs. Well, after trying many methods, including IPC, LawlessPhenomPPC and iAtkos V7, I got the old Kalyway 10.5.2 running on it. Video works as VESA, both Network adapters works with teh 5751 driver. Still no sata (I have to do that mod on AppleVIAATA for the SI 3114 chipset) and the major problem... The IDE channels are working only through AppleGenericPCATA, which makes for a VERY slow PATA D performance. The thing is really slow, like 2M/s. Ridiculous.

Now I'll have to install windows just to get that ID info about my hardware, so that I can modify the appleVIAATA driver to make it work with my SATA, and hopefully, also make the IDE PATA faster.

Next, I'll try Kalyway on the ARIMAs. I hope this will work. Also downloading Hazard's now!

Thanks!

OK. I am abbandoning this Tyan K8SR project for now. I got the vendor and device IDs for my sata and IDE controllers and inserted it into the AppleVIAATA.kext, deleted the AppleGenericPCATA.kext driver and... no go. It won't boot anymore. "Still waiting for root device". I hate this error code! And yes, I've tried many different "rd=diskxsx" combinations. It seems the VIA trick won't work for my chipset. The generic apple PCATA driver is a no go with no UDMA. It's really slow. Unusable!

It's not that bad, I guess. One more Linux/Windows only server.

Anyway, getting some K8N-DRE boards to use my opterons now. And downloading the Hazard's distros.

Thanks!

I was able to get k8n-dre working with my sata harddrive from my phenom system. Its running ideneb 10.5.8 lite. I have 2x 270's that is sluggish with all four cores, it apears to tax the first core heavy. If I boot cpus=2 it runs 2 cores nice. Its almost as fast as my phenom. No Sleep though.

I think to do all 4 cores...

Need Modified Bios? or maybe its just a cpupower.kext, maybe speed spectrum? however, it could be a cooling issue do to the mounting of the heatpipe coolermaster 101a's,(its a tight fit) and they run at about 47c-52c.

Any thoughts on this I would appreciate. I want to say thanks to el Kabong. Your posting on this site and overclockers made me deside to spend the 100 bucks or so Ive put into this system and it runs very nice so far. Just wish we could get all 4 cores running. Let me know if you have had any progress.

*Update* Speed Spectrum Disabled in Bios. Then, I ran my ideneb 10.5.8 customized install to reloaded patches fixes and vodookernel, Now all 4cores are running fast & properly, system will try to sleep, turns off monitor, hard disk but fans are on, might be a bios issue. However, for now Im more than happy on how this hack turned out. I think Ill build 2.
