sporker
Hello all, From looking at the wiki here and some googling, I think this combo should fly: $54 Mainboard - Asus P5KPL-AM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131369 $32 Video - Asus EN8400GS (Nvidia 8400) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814121360 $65 Processor - Intel E5200 2.5GHz Dual Core 64-bit - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116072 $47 RAM 2x1GB - Kingston DDR2 800 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134487 $55 HD 500GB - WD Caviar Green 32MB cache - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136358 $26 DVD burner - LG SATA - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827136177 $45 Case - Cheap, Red, Desktop, may need to spraypaint the red - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811192089 This is for a simple HTPC running Plex. The goal is CHEAP. For starters, it's just going to feed a SD TV with S-Video. What gave me the most trouble is that most of the "cheap builds" I was finding relied on older Gigabyte boards that aren't even available used on EBay anymore. I'd appreciate any feedback before I submit this order tonight! scwhar
I built a machine using almost exactly the same spec (p5kpl-am/8400GS/e5200/2gbRAM/500GB HD/LG DVD!) and it works well, did have some graphics problems on 10.6.2 but stuck with 10.6.1 and all was good, I think could've got 10.6.2 going but built for a mate so didn't have time to mess around with it. Cool, thanks for the info. I know that in all my googling I'd seen some reference to NVidia cards in general having issues on the SL updates. I don't need perfection (especially at this price), and I'd imagine that eventually things will get fixed up - from what I understand there's a ton of nvidia cards in use in the hackintosh community and plenty in real macs as well (two real macs in my house have nvidia gpus). Chasing the "perfect" hardware seems like a kind of futile waste of time... Plus, the thing is going to be for tv watching, so if it works at 10.6.1 for now, that's fine.
