DaveVegas
Hey guys, I want to install iAKTOS 7i 10.5.7 on my PC. Here are my specs: Computertype ACPI-Multiprocessor-PC CPU Type QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2400 MHz (9 x 267) Motherboard Name MSI G31M V2 (MS-7379) Motherboard Chipsatz Intel Bearlake G31 RAM 3328 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM) (4GB with 64bit) Graphic Card NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512 (512 MB) Internet Card Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC -------------- Keyboard HID Mouse HID So my questions are: Will my PC handle this kind of software? Will my Keyboard or Mouse work? I have 2 Screens (24" and 22"), will this os handle both screens? Are there graphic drivers for mac (for 8800 GTS 512?) Last but not least: Should I give it a try? Thank you very much! I'm sorry if this question was discussed time over time, but I just wasnt sure Please help me Dave Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/206302-will-my-hardware-handle-it/ Share on other sites
Zaap
The crucial element, as always, is the motherboard. I found it listed on the 10.5.2 Wiki, (as G31M2 under MSI) but nothing more recent. Someone got it working there with a retail install, then upgraded to 10.5.3. So you should certainly give 10.5.7 a shot. I have no idea about the 'distro' installers like iatkos anymore though, but it can't hurt to try it. If that doesn't work, try to find the distro used by someone on the Wiki and see how far you can update it. Everything else in your setup should work fine. The 8800GTS works fine, just use graphic strings. It should do dual displays, provided the graphic strings are correct. Yes, PC keyboards/Mice work fine with OSX as long as they are USB, not the older PS2. DaveVegas
Hey guys, Well, I found this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auj3jEtp4_E I will now try it with this tutorial. So I downloaded Kalyway 10.5.2 SSE2/SSE3 EFI V8 as in the tutorial descriped. Now, on the Warez site there was this text (I'm sure i cant paste warez links here) [img=http://www.majotphotography.com/TestingGrounds/Leopard/DSC_2022.jpg] " If you want adding drivers support to dvd boot you must put the Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd folder on your desktop then put kexts you want add to dvd extensions in the ADD_KEXT_TO_DVD folder (you can find natit for ati hd in this folder) and run Add_kext_to_dvd_boot.command !!! Even if you have chosen a kernel at install, you can still try the others kernels after installation ! (same thing for dvd boot except that only modbinkernel , speedstepkernel , kabylkernel and nforcekernel are available as boot options !) All you have to do is just press F8 at Darwin's prompt and then type the kernel's name you want to boot with : sleepkernel (intel/amd/sse2/sse3) speedstepkernel (intel/amd/sse2/sse3) nforcekernel (intel/sse3) modbinkernel (intel/amd/sse3) vanillakernel (intel/sse3) kabylkernel (intel/sse3) with sleep support Kernels [spoiler]kernel_9.2_sleep kernel_9.2_speedstep kernel_9.2.2_kabyl kernel_922_modbin kernel_92_nforce kernel_vanilla_922 Graphics Drivers Ati_Radeon X1000Series ATYinject for 19xx series NATIT_For_X1000_series ATIRadeonX1000SeriesGraphics 1950gt_pro X2000_HD_and_X3000_HD_Series NATIT_For_X2000_X3000_Series HD2900xt_pro white_menus_fixe_HD2600_pro white_menus_fixe_HD3850_3870x2 ATI_Radeon_HD_2600_Pro_AGP (this one no need for natit and white menufix) ATI_Radeon_HD_2600_XT_AGP (this one no need for natit and white menufix) Nvidia_Geforce (select one only) NVinject NVinject-128 NVinject-256 NVinject-320 NVinject-512 NVinject-640 NVinject-768 NVinjectGO NVinjectGO-512 NVInject_Clevo_M570RU 8700gfx NATIT_gfnvidia Intel_GMA GMA950 (tiger one full accelerated and resolution support but with mouse artifact) GMAX3100 (not tested) Audio Drivers Intel NVIDIA VIA ATI HDAudioController NVIDIAAC97Audio Realtek Sigmatel ConexantAnalogDevicesHDAudioCodec (generic output support) ALC883_DS3,p5k pro etc... alc889a_shutdown_support ALC882_p5w_dh_deluxe sigmatel_9200_inspiron_9400 Networks Cards AppleBCM440XEthernet AppleBCM5751Ethernet AppleRTL8169Ethernet MarvellNetworkAdapter RealtekR1000 skge_marvell forcedeth Wifi_Card [spoiler]IO80211Family AtherosWirelessAdapter Zydas-ZD1211-1215 wifi_Broadcom_airport RT2500-RT73-USB wifi_AP_Realtek_RTL8187L wifi_Realtek_RTL8187B iwi2200beta Mobo_Chipsets (support for ati; nvidia; intel; via; sis; marvell; jmicron) [spoiler]AppleNForceATA AppleOnboardPCATA AppleVIAATA AppleGenericPCATA SiliconImage3132 Thirds_Applications (will be installed in /applications/KOOLSOFTS/) adium archives candybar changeFinder colloquy fairmount Growl GmailNotifier kextHelperB7 onyx Iphoto macam_iusbcam MacTheRipper Mojo Proxi pacifist perian ppfomatic SimplyBurns solarseek stuffitExpander textmate transmission vlc xbench Patches Hardcoded_SMBIOS Lastnetkassmbios (with coreplayer fix , mozzy and logmein !) DaveVegas
I'm sorry that i triple post but this is kind of important. So, I tried installing everything like in the tutorial and then I got this error: http://i46.tinypic.com/fy1i5s.jpg I used the "Search Function" and I found this: If you get Error: com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin, then boot HDD OS X install with -s at drawin prompt, then at the :/ root# prompt, type the following lines, pressing Enter and waiting for :/ root# to appear: CODEmount -uw / cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ mv ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext.bad Exit to see if this clears the error... Zaap
Dave, If you read the link I posted, you'll notice the person that got the board working used a modified BIOS. It's a safe bet your board simply won't work without the modified BIOS posted- and that is only IF it's really the exact same board. Beware, that if it isn't for the exact board, it could brick your motherboard. If you really need a Hackintosh, here's what I'd recommend even over the BIOS hack with the exact MSI mobo: You have 98% fully working components. Write off the MSI motherboard for Hackintosh. Invest $50 in a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L, or $60 for a Gigabyte G41M-ES2L. Put your other components in either one. Both of these boards are among the most popular socket 775 boards for Hackintosh and work extremely well. The G31 board will need a PCI LAN card as the onboard no longer works. Rather than pull your hair out with a barely supported board that requires hacks and may never really be a stable Hackintosh, it seems to me $50 to $60 bucks for a board that will definitely work, run the latest OSX and be very stable and reliable is well worth it. Also, if you go for the newer boards, pony up for a retail copy of OSX. Leopard is only $30 and well worth the price. (Don't just pirate a copy, most here are in favor of supporting Apple's OS sales, if not always their hardware). Newer install methods allow you to install straight from the actual retail DVD (hence retail install). Otherwise, you're kind of dealing with what many around here who've been building Hacks for a while already dealt with a couple years ago. Kalyway and such are hopelessly outdated. Do yourself a favor and use a better board, then you'll have access to all the more modern install methods (with tons of up to date guides and support around here) which are much easier. DaveVegas
Never really thought about getting a new mainboard, since my pc is a finished pc. (That means I buyed it and never looked inside, altought I bought a nvidia geforce a while ago and then I forgot about it) Great Idea! I bought 2x4gb ramsticks a while ago and I was wondering why it didnt work out to my mainboard. I saw this mainboard supports 8gig =D My ramsticks are from mushkin, will osx handle them as well? I saw on the reviews of the mainboard, that everyone overclocks their Q6600, should I do this aswell? Or would this be just a waste of time for osx? That means, when everything goes right, I've got a 8GB Ram, 3ghz (or at least 2.8ghz) cpu, osx machine just by buying this wonderful cheap motherboard Thanks man!! You are my GOD. When I got my mainboard I'll try it again and post in this thread. I bet those set you back a hefty sum...even when DDR2 was cheap a year ago. I am guessing those are probably DDR2 800MHz dimms. I would definitely get the Gigabyte G41 board that Zaap pointed out that way it would support them. Mushkin makes some pretty good ram - shouldn't have any issue with OS X with those. I would certainly look into OCing the Q6600. You will probably need an aftermarket heatsink and fan as the stock one probably won't get you too far before the cpu temps becomes a problem. Depending on what you are doing with the machine, a reasonable overclock (somewhere in the 3 GHz range) can make a significant and noticeable improvement. Just depends on what you are doing with the machine. DaveVegas
Just bought the Motherboard G41M. I found this tutorial: http://www.infinitemac.com/f19/guide-gigab...tutorial-t3187/ Will these files work also for the G41M??? Dave Edit: @ Broken Thx! A friend of mine said, the cpu would get too hot at 3.0ghz overclocking since i dont have any water cooling. I would use the machine as a workstation. I produce films and dont have money yet to buy a real mac. So, especially After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Thank you guys for the good support! Dave Buy the $30 Snow Leopard upgrade. It does NOT require that you already have an OS installed. The license agreement for it basically says that you agree that you already own Leopard, but the reality is that its not required for install. Apple's idea of an OS "upgrade" is not the same as Microsoft's. With a Windows upgrade disc, it looks for an existing Windows install before it installs correctly (or activates online). If you install an upgrade version without having a previous version on the hard drive, your serial number will not activate online and the OS will only work for a limited time. Apples on the other hand is just basically a shake of the hands. They trust that you are being honest about buying a previous versions. But nothing in the install is different from a regular version of Snow Leopard. This is well known amongst most everybody. So, just pay the $30 for the upgrade disc. It will work fine. When Zaap spoke of a $30 Leopard disc, he was actually referring to the Snow Leopard upgrade. Unless you have some software that won't run under Snow Leopard, you really at this point should be looking to run Snow Leopard. It does NOT require that you already have an OS installed" is not clear. No, you do NOT need to own any previous version of Mac OS for it to work. Whilst Apple is selling it at a discount for folks who are upgrading, its not required at all. The Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD is the exact same as the regular non upgrade version of Snow Leopard. The software is the same. The only difference is what the EULA says and whats printed on the box. What about my GUIDE question? Zaap
Sorry, been away for a bit. Yeah, the 'upgrade' disc for Snow Leopard being $30 is a little confusing. Bottom line; it is the full version, so don't be worried about getting it and it requiring anything else to install. Apple doesn't do serial numbers and proof of previous OS's, so like Broken said, it's the honor system. (Maybe not a good idea to tell the Apple store that you're buying SL for a Hackintosh though!) As for the guide, generally, yes, most guides for the G31M will also work for the G41M as far as the main install. The main difference is some of the onboard components are different, so you'll need kexts specific to the G41M. As I recall setting mine up, it uses the same kexts for LAN as the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P. As for audio, I forget the specifics for the onboard, but I do know it works. To keep things simple, I used this USB audio adapter. It's $8 and no-nonsense, as it just plugs in and works with any OS, no futzing with drivers. Also sounds better than the onboard as well since the USB bus is a cleaner path. As for a guide, the same boot-132 disc that works for the G31M may work with the G41M as well. I think they are similar enough and recall seeing posts from people who set up their G41M using a guide for the G31. I can't say for certain about the exact guide you linked to. You definitely want to use boot-132, as some methods require that you already have Leopard up and running in order to prepare a flash drive for Snow Leopard. So long as the same Boot-132 CD works for the G31 and G41, then all should be well. Boot-132 should contain the basic kexts for the board, and allow you to swap out and boot from the SL retail disk. You can also use the psystar Rebel EFI (if it can still be found) to boot and install Snow Leopard- then just install your own kext files. (As far as I know, it's really just a version of boot-132 that psystar pilfered from the OSx86 community with support for a wide range of hardware that it will allow to boot the SL retail disk.) Also of course, you need a bootloader (Chameleon) as even after properly installing a system it won't be able to self-boot without chameleon.(This step should be detailed in any decent guide-it's usually a one-click install process). I would recommend looking through this guide, as no matter how you set things up, you should do a proper DSDT file, which is explained in links in the first post. (Make sure you follow his updated links, not the originals that he says are outdated.) When I set up my G41M board, I was tinkering, so it's hard to explain exactly how I got it to work. Basically, I used the Lifehacker 'no hacking required' guide that's actually for the EP45-UD3P. The basic setup of SL worked great for me with the G41M board, but I had to track down and install a couple of kext files, and also create my DSDT file. The main problem with recommending this method to you however, is that it requires a working install of OSX to begin with, in order to set up the USB flash drive installer first. If you have access to a Mac, and an 8GB or better flash drive to spare, you could give it a try. DaveVegas
Thank you. First, thank you for the USB Audio tipp. I'm going to buy my Snow Leopard and this USB Audio today. You asked on which GUIDE I'm reffering to. It's this guide here: http://www.infinitemac.com/f19/guide-gigab...tutorial-t3187/ Unfortenatly I dont have any Mac Machine in my house. So I dont have acces to a working mac machine. In the GUIDE I'm reffering to there are these files atteched: A prepatched dsdt.aml for the G31M-ES2L HDAEnabler.kext - Enables AppleHDA VoodooPower.kext - Fixes Restart/Shutdown and enables SpeedStep IOUSBFamily.kext - Stops USB drives being unmounted at Sleep Everything is made for G31M. For example, a prepached dsdt.aml for the G31M. Will this DSDT work also on my G41M? And the kext files? Are there also going to work? There is also a Download Boot132-G31M-ES2L.iso . Can I use this one aswell? Thanks for everything! DaveVegas
So finally buyed Snow Leopard. I set up everything properly. Now, I just have to wait for my new Motherboard to arrive. I downloaded Realtek 1111 Kext and ALC888 Kext so I am able to use my sound card and internet card. ( I know I said USB Audio will be my solution, but why dont give it a shot? ) I also burned a CD with the G31M Bootloader and I put all the files on a USB. So, everything is set up. But I have one question. Because I wanted to have all the files I need now, I wondered how the hell should I install my Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 512? I found a Tutorial on this Board but this is only for 8800 GT 512, GTS wont work. I've heard something of Nvinject. What is this? Can I use this to install my graphic card? Zaap
Just use the Boot-132 above (download the iso, burn it in image mode to a CD) to boot the machine, and switch to the SL install DVD. If you get as far as booting the SL disk and installing, you're good. If there's an error, then it's the wrong boot-132. As I said before, I'm pretty certain the G41M will boot from the same boot-132 as a G31M board, but keep in mind I haven't done it myself as I didn't set mine up that way. Typically this is how it goes: Once you've got Snow Leopard installed, you'll still need the Boot-132 disk to boot the system, just point it at the hard drive rather than the DVD drive. (IE: you'll type some characters like 'fe' or something to boot the DVD, and either 80 or 81 to boot the hard drive. Boot-132 should give you a prompt and tell you which characters.) (This is, until you get bootloader IE: Chameleon installed). Before hacking anything, should update the system using either software update, or get the LAN working and download the 10.6.2 or 10.6.1 update from Apple as a .dmg file. ( I point out the different updates, because my own G41M system is still running 10.6.1 so I don't know if 10.6.2 works or not. Do your own homework on this- if in doubt, stick with 10.6.1.) Once updated, you'll probably still have to reboot and use Boot-132 again. Then track down and find the right kext files for the G41M- as I said before, use the guide I linked to, he has files specific to the G41M. Do not assume the exact kexts and DSDT files for the G31M will work for the G41M- as for the DSDT, you should compile your own for the specific hardware. It's not that difficult, just follow the instructions in the linked guide. To make installing kexts easier, download kexthelper. (kext files must have proper permissions, or else they don't do anything even if put in the right place. It's either use a tool like this, or use arcane command line stuff to get them working.) Your video card may require EFI strings to work properly- (if you can't change res and have no QE/CI) You can try EFI studio for that- just select your exact video card/vid ram amount from the dropdown, and apply. When all is running well, but you're still needing Boot-132 to boot the machine, you can install Chameleon- it's the same proceedure as any guide for the G31M. After this, you should be able to boot normally without the Boot-132 disk. Sorry I can't be more specific than this, no one seems to have made a 'just do this' guide for the G41M. One of these days I should probably just do one myself, and links to all the exact files. Luckily, it's a very similar board to the G31M which has a ton of complete guides. So basically just follow the G31M guides for most of the basics- the only differences should be a few specific kext files. While you're waiting, just read up and familiarize yourself with the process. It's not difficult, just there are certain concepts you have to get familiar with. When installing, if you hit a snag, just search for the same problem online, or ask for help for the specific thing here- generally there's little you'll encounter that hasn't been dealt with a billion times before. DaveVegas
Hey zaap, when I done everything and I have all the files and stuff we could maybe sit together and make a Guide for other G41M users. What do you think? Dave I'll keep you posted^^ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/206302-will-my-hardware-handle-it/#findComment-1387101 Share on other sites
Zaap
Hey zaap, when I done everything and I have all the files and stuff we could maybe sit together and make a Guide for other G41M users. What do you think? Dave I'll keep you posted^^ I can offer help in any way I can, but keep in mind even though I have a G41M system, it's not currently available for me to tinker with in order to help make a guide. So I'm mainly going on memory of how to set it up, not hands-on. Right now, my G41M is the bedroom media-center for my wife and me, with a ton of shows recorded on it, Plex running our DVD library, music, etc. I'd be in danger of my life if she was unable to watch American Idol and whatever else is on there while I'm off tinkering with the machine. But since you'll be starting from scratch, it'd be *extremely* helpful if you would document your process, and assemble what works into a guide for others to follow. That's something that so few people ever bother to do (which I understand, because it's massively time-consuming) but it ends up saving so much time and effort for everyone else that follows. DaveVegas
I do understand you. And I dont want that your wife is not able to look at american idol =) But since I start the process all over I can make a perfect guide for the G41M. Maybe I'll do a video tutorial (With Camtasia and then with my cam to show the boot progress) I'll keep you posted. My G41M still dont arrive.. DaveVegas
Hey guys. I bought the Paragon Partition Manager (My dad gave it to me lol) so I wanted to format a partitioned HD and then I found this: I can format it to a Apple HFS Hardrive! Should I do this? Then I dont have to use Disk Utilly in Mac later... What do you guys think? Whilst OS X still supports it, you can't boot OS X from it. What you want is HFS+ , also known as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Just wait and format the drive in Disk utility to Mac OS Extended (journaled)- which should be the default.
