Hi

Apologies if this has already been posted but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on it.

You may or may not be aware that Quartz 2D Extreme (a supercharged version of Quartz Extreme) is disabled

in a default install of Tiger. To enable it and give all window redraws a bit of a boost :

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver Quartz2DExtremeEnabled -boolean YES

You can also use the Quartz Debug application to enable it. That's found in

/Developer/Applications/Performance Tools folder

This seems to work fine on my 915GAGL motherboard with a Celeron D 325J and a gig of DDR 400.

I did notice that MacPar Deluxe now panics when I have Quartz 2D Extreme enabled, don't know why though!

Simply disabling it again allows me to use that app. There may be other apps that break when it is enabled, haven't

thoroughly tested it yet. It may be wishful thinking but on my low end Mactel it seems to accelerate all Finder

redraw operations and make the whole thing seem a bit smoother. I don't know how stable it is though.

There's a bit more info on Quartz 2D Extreme here :-

Could some other people who have a 915G chipset give this a try and let me know their results.

Interesting...

I tried it and turned it on with the terminal command. The QE debug app didn't show an option. I restarted and there is still no entry in system profiler.

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver Quartz2DExtremeEnabled -boolean YES

gives me '1'.

So it seems my system isn't capable of QE2DEE? :(

See my config below in sig.

I switched to a lower resolution (1024x768) and now it works. Even after switching back to my normal resolution of 1400x1050.

The differences seem to by more on the psychological side. I noticed nothing. Xbench scores are also the same.

I have a problem with one application which doesn't work with QE2D enabled. It is called McNIB (a mouse click simulator).

So maybe I'm going to switch it off again.

I'd not turn this on...

It is super buggy on a PPC now, let alone an x86 Mac. You'll notice graphics corruption in some apps and even worse in others. It isn't even always faster currently... I'm leaving it off until Apple turns it on by default, personally.
