jpsim
I'm following this guide which is apparently based on Donk's work (thanks), but I can't get to the install menu, only getting a dark grey screen with the spinning beach ball. I've tried plenty of different boot flags (-v / -f / cpus=1), using the retail DVD vs an ISO, rebooting 8-10 times like the install notes recommend but nothing has worked. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm running VMWare workstation 7 in Win7 on an i7 920. Thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/204479-sl-in-vmware-spinning-beach-ball/ Share on other sites

Read the manual carefully and it's very straight forward but before running the install script make sure to replace the darwin.iso with the one for WS 7 and supports SL. good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/204479-sl-in-vmware-spinning-beach-ball/#findComment-1372585 Share on other sites

jpsim
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I get the same results with Donk's method from your link. I'm likely not reading the manual correctly. I'm booting with darwin.iso from the wks7 update then pressing F8 to select "c", switching the mounted iso to my SL install disc image. Here's my vmx file, just in case it's to blame: .encoding = "windows-1252" config.version = "8" virtualHW.version = "7" maxvcpus = "4" scsi0.present = "TRUE" scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic" memsize = "1024" ide0:0.present = "TRUE" ide0:0.fileName = "Mac.vmdk" ide1:0.present = "TRUE" ide1:0.fileName = "C:\Users\User\Documents\darwin-wks7\darwin.iso" ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-image" floppy0.startConnected = "FALSE" floppy0.fileName = "" floppy0.autodetect = "TRUE" ethernet0.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.connectionType = "nat" ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE" ethernet0.addressType = "generated" usb.present = "TRUE" ehci.present = "TRUE" sound.present = "TRUE" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" pciBridge0.present = "TRUE" pciBridge4.present = "TRUE" pciBridge4.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge4.functions = "8" pciBridge5.present = "TRUE" pciBridge5.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge5.functions = "8" pciBridge6.present = "TRUE" pciBridge6.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge6.functions = "8" pciBridge7.present = "TRUE" pciBridge7.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge7.functions = "8" vmci0.present = "TRUE" roamingVM.exitBehavior = "go" displayName = "Mac" guestOS = "darwin10" nvram = "Mac.nvram" virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted" extendedConfigFile = "Mac.vmxf" ethernet0.generatedAddress = [redacted] uuid.location = [redacted] uuid.bios = [redacted] cleanShutdown = "TRUE" replay.supported = "FALSE" replay.filename = "" ide0:0.redo = "" pciBridge0.pciSlotNumber = "17" pciBridge4.pciSlotNumber = "21" pciBridge5.pciSlotNumber = "22" pciBridge6.pciSlotNumber = "23" pciBridge7.pciSlotNumber = "24" scsi0.pciSlotNumber = "16" usb.pciSlotNumber = "32" ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "33" sound.pciSlotNumber = "34" ehci.pciSlotNumber = "35" vmci0.pciSlotNumber = "36" vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "16777216" ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0" vmci0.id = "-248993074" ich7m.present = "TRUE" keyboard.vusb.enable = "TRUE" mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE" ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE" tools.syncTime = "FALSE" usb:0.present = "TRUE" usb:1.present = "TRUE" usb:1.deviceType = "hub" usb:0.deviceType = "mouse" smc.present = "FALSE" checkpoint.vmState = "" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/204479-sl-in-vmware-spinning-beach-ball/#findComment-1372736 Share on other sites
Donk
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I get the same results with Donk's method from your link. I'm likely not reading the manual correctly. I'm booting with darwin.iso from the wks7 update then pressing F8 to select "c", switching the mounted iso to my SL install disc image. Here's my vmx file, just in case it's to blame: Don't mount the darwin.iso directly, just your SL DVD. VMware takes care of the darwin.iso being loaded and then re-mounting the SL DVD. Some other questions, although would be best posted in my thread: 1. Is VT enabled in BIOS? Look for Securable program at www.grc.com and run it to check on the system status. 2. What is the SL image? Only retail DVD or image will do? Won't support "distros" and cannot work with grey recovery DVDs from a real Mac. Finally, Recommend you use SCSI virtual hard drive not IDE, where we have seen issues when booting. P.S. Please attach files rather than inline them, so I can easily download and check them. Thanks. jpsim
Sweetness, it works! When you said that darwin.iso didn't have to be mounted manually, I figured it had to go in the script folder, which fixed everything. Extremely trivial when you think about it. Amazing work and thank you! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/204479-sl-in-vmware-spinning-beach-ball/#findComment-1373000 Share on other sites
