sconry
I am looking to build the fastest Final Cut/Lightroom machine i can for about $3000. I need it to be as reliable as possible, as i am going to be using it regularly for large film and photo projects. It needs to support the OSX 10, and all of its components without fail. For it to be worth it, it would have to beat the pants off of any Mac Pro in the price range. Does anyone have any suggestions on which components to start looking at? Im assuming some people here have successfully done this kind of thing in the past. What are your thought and recommendations? Thanks so much for your $.02! LogicalUser
I've only got about 1¢ worth of advice on the subject I'm afraid, as I've yet to venture above $800 on a build but i'll provide what i can. First, you'll find the vast majority of the people here are building single-socket & CPU machines, as dual socket/dual CPU significantly increases the cost and may/may not be worth it depending on intended use. That's not to say its not viable, just that you've gotta look beneath the surface for further info. Second, Intel's current lineup of dual-socket Xeon CPUs are looking rather dated, at least when compared to Intel's latest. Thankfully, keep in mind that its Dec. 29th, and Intel has big plans for CES the second week in Jan, last I heard they were introducing 20+ CPUs, albeit consumer oriented ones. In addition, IIRC Intel's commercial/server grade CPUs usually drop in early Feb. Plus, and while I hate to mention it as Apple rumors are always a crapshoot, but pretty much everyone is expecting at least something to change with the Mac Pros in the next month or three, likely the addition of something from Intel's latest lineup. RustyShackleford
this is the fastest so far (i think) mobo: asus p6t (240$) intel core i7 extreme 975 socket 1366 (999$) / or intel i7 920 socket 1366...(199$) ||975 is faster, 920 is 800$ cheaper triple channel ddr3 1600 mhz (required for x58 type motherboards) (318$ 6x2gb sticks, min 3x2 @ 159$) western digital velociraptor 10000 rpm hard drive (for OS) (229$) and as many hard drives as you want on top of that ...for scratchdisks etc.. 1000 watt power supply....(200$) nvidia gts250,9800gt, or any compatible raedon card (check the site for best card or most popular) (149$) case 30-300$ depends what you want monitor 199$-10,000$ depending on what you want p6t 12gb ram 10,000 rpm HDD 1000 watt power supply i7 975 gts 250 graphics 100$ case 300$ monitor comes to 2536$ , this setup will not only be a macpro system....it will outperform it by far...the only thing i would check on is the compatibility of the i7 975...you know...make sure people have been able to use 10.6.x with a 975 otherwise go with the 920 it will save you 800$ and many people have had huge success with it. any questions let me know...im on my 4th setup and im going to build a i7 920 machine in a couple of months. Cindori
Why 1000w PSU when that system uses like 400w? And get a SSD for boot drive. the fastest GPU would be GTX285 or ATI4890.
