ATI 4670 Kernel Panic on 10.6.2 (ATIRadeonX2000.kext)

Dear All,

Feel free to skip the first part of this, it is just background that could help pre-empt any questions.

I was trying to get Snow Leopard installed on my Dell E520 PC today. After a lot of experimentation, I created a custom boot-132 CD that would boot my retail disc, and installed Snow Leopard 10.6 vanilla onto my PC.

After install, I used my boot CD to start the main install, and got a successful boot, apart from graphics glitches indicating a non-compatible out-the-box framebuffer. By booting using the -x flag for safe mode, I was able to get going and set up my PC.

I installed the latest PC EFI beta, and replaced the file '/boot' with the one from this page on netkas' site (beta booter). I added the following KEXTS to the /E/E folder:

- FakeSMC (V2.5)

- AppleIntelCPUPowerDisable

- OpenHaltRestart

- Dummy kext that injects my SATA RAID device ID into stock drivers

Now, I could boot fine in safe mode, so I installed 10.6.2 using the combo (full file) update from the Apple website. It installed OK, and I rebooted.

Here's where the problems start.

I followed the instructions to edit my com.apple.Boot.plist file, and put it into my /Extra directory. I added the following to it :

	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>pci1</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>y</string>

When I boot my PC now, I get the following, depend on what I do.

Normal or verbose boot = Get kernel panic on 'ATIRadeonX2000.kext', after most of the boot process.

Safe mode = System hangs at end of verbose boot screen (DSMOS ready, or something like that. Since I don't have DSMOS, I guess this is part of FakeSMC)

Has anyone spotted something I have done wrongly? I have tried various beta booters, and various incarnations of yes, y, for the GraphicsEnabler property. I am using the stock 10.6.2 kexts, which apparently work for others using similar/same cards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I double that. :D Same fault on my side. Using mobo G41m-ES2L, vanilla 10.6.2, pc efi 10.5 and same kexts as written above except of one with Sata enabling..

EDIT: It works now.. With stock pc efi 10.5 and -pci1 line. :) Full QE/CI, 1920x1080. Connected with vga. Will try with dvi today.

are you using frambufferdisabler?

do you have the new ati v.3 installer or the imac 2009 kexts?

after Repairing disk permission you must use KextUtility to force rebuilding every scripts before restart.

My sapphire 4670 DDR4 work on G31m-ES2L with VGA, VGA>DVI and HDMI (DVI must plug together at the same time)

I have a 4670 on a fresh install of 10.6 which i could only boot into safe mode, but upon the combo 10.6.2 update I could boot into the desktop.

However, I have a whole mess of drivers/enablers etc and because i used a script for another motherboard that had nvidia drivers included.

I believe I have:

evoenabler, netkas custom boot, stock kexts, and graphicsenabler=yes. I am also using netkas patches for qe/ci. I have dual 24" montiors working, one on dvi and one on hdmi>dvi and they both work and look great, I was blown away however I have a problem with random horizontal lines appearing at random times, for example it will be flawless, but if i roll over a link and the text pops up, that pop up will cause the lines to appear.

Bascially, I am new to all of this, I threw a bunch of kexts/patches at the system before i updated to 10.6.2 trying to get it to work and am trying to figure out what i need to do to troule shoot this and optimizing it to where i am only using what i need to use.

Can anyone give me some insight on where I should start?

EDIT: I intend to do a full reinstall since I only installed on a temp drive, I will report back with my findings.

Ok guys, I am stoked as can be!!!

I am running 10.6.2 succesfully after following this guide:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=185097

I replaced the kext's in the graphics folder included with the script with the kext's found in #radeonhd at irc.osx86.hu for the 4600 series in SL. Everything is working great except i need to get my audio working, but my setup is looking pretty sick!!

10.6.2 on 500GB hdd

core I7 920 @ 3.8Ghz

MSI X58M

6GB 1600Mhz ddr3

ati 4670 w/ dual display working. one dvi one hdmi>dvi. Both full 19x12 w/ qe/ci
