iMAKEMAC
Hey, I'm on my third Macbook and sick of being hounded by problems. So now I'm in the process of returning and planned to buy an iMac but I figured I'll just pass on that and buy a nice Lenovo and build me a little Mac. I had looked at this set up...I want it to run as close to a out-of-the-box desktop Mac as possible: Intel D945GTP (Does it matter which Intel board I use as long as its the D945 series?) Celeron D CPU (Plan to upgrade it down the road when I see how well this works) 2 x 512MB Use the onboard GMA950 video (add a better video card later and one that has 100% support) Will the onboard sound work? Will the onboard NIC work? Are there any wireless PCI or USB network cards that I can use with it since I have a Airport Express I'd like to utilize? 160GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA HDD LG 16x Dual Layer DVD-RW Haven't decided on a case yet but what's the best type of power supply to use? I know it's not really a "blazing" fast machine but I really only need it for the odd bit of iLife stuff that I do and I'm trying to do it cheaply as I want to pour the majority of my coin into a notebook. Will I be able to run the OS updates? Thanks for any help you can provide! With this set up run just like OSX on any intel based Mac? Any limitations? niteman1969
Should all work but beware the onboard audio if it uses sigmatel make sure it is not 9200. 922x series work with kext editing but will only give 2 channel output and no input. In fact most onboard sound cards will only give you 2 channel output. The gma950 seems to have the best support under osx86 at the moment as it works straight out of the box with no kext editing required and fully supports ci/qe. If skype / voip is important to you you may need to get a creative audigy nx usb box to get 5.1 / 7.1 audio with full input and output or an maudio card or any from the wiki that show that input and output are working. Check the wiki for wireless network cards, I myself have a belkin with a broadcom chipset which required some kext editing to get working but now is detected and utilized as an airport card. It will work like a proper intel mac and you can do software updates on apps but not security updates or os updates until they have been hacked and put up on bittorents. There are no limitations on the software that you use and should be just as compatible as any normal intel mac with PPC software running under rosetta as long as your processor has sse3. Ie any PPC software that works on an intel mac will work on a osx86 machine with sse3. Any that doesnt work on an intel mac will not work on a osx86 machine. Beware though an osx86 machine often needs a lot of kext editing to get things up and running in the first place but once done is as stable as any intel mac. As a newbie it took me quite a lot of reading on the forums to get my wireless card and onboard audio working. It now works fine and havent had to touch it since. OSX86 is now fully working on my machine and being that up till 4 weeks ago I had never seen or used a mac i don't think that is bad going. I would say take the plunge - you wont regret it and if needs be you can always get a mac later when funds allow. For now I am very pleased with my hackintosh and have mostly not bothered with using windows since i have got everything working in osx. bofors
160GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA HDD Get an SATA II (3.0 Gbps). LG 16x Dual Layer DVD-RW A Pioneer would a better choice, that is what Apple uses. Haven't decided on a case yet but what's the best type of power supply to use? Since you are trying to save money, look at the Antec Sonata II and Antec P150 cases, they come with good power supplies. iMAKEMAC
Thanks for the help!! What full function audio cards are out there? I'm not looking for the top of the line deal...but something that will give me audio in/out. Would a SB Live! 5.1 work? Also, instead of the Celeron I was going to use a Pentium D 305...should work fine I assume? Thanks again. bofors
I do not know about audio cards, but I think USB audio devices are know to work. Check the HCL's (on the Wiki page). I assume you mean an 805, not a 305. That is a good choice.
