jaexprojectxd
Ok I already had my onboard ethernet work with osx when i first installed the os. so i have a wired Microsoft ethernet card MN-120. when i plugged it into my Vaio v505, its recongnized in the taskbar above. when i highlight it, it shows greyed out: unknown, legacy, and selectable power off pci. when i open up network in my system preferences, it automatically detected it and set it up etc. does this mean this is a non broadcom device? so this means my pcmcia card bus does work with osx, its just the devices plugged in being stubborn. any advice on how i can use this finding in a way to use a wireless pcmcia card? should i go ahead and try the linksys 54g w/speedboost since others say its a broadcom based card. rollo
hey, so I had a chance to check this on my 505AP. I've tried putting in two different 802.11 pcmcia cards, both while hot and before boot. IOPCCard detects plug in and IOPCCardBusDevice allocates resources. IOPCCard then proceeds to print out vendor ID, device number, memory location, and IRQ. So jaexprojectxd, you are right that the pcmcia card bus is working. However, in both cases (cisco systems Aironet 340 and SMC EZConnect 2.4 11Mbps) IOPCCarddevice is unable to do family matching and doesn't load a driver. (In point of fact, it doesn't even try with the SMC card.) So maybe a way to get this to work by grabbing a driver from darwin or editing the info.plist from the generic ethernet or airport kext? I think I saw something on getting airport working somewhere else in this forum. I'll take a look... cyrana
Neither of those two cards has a supported chipset, though, rollo. Only ralink USB (and sometimes PCI) or a few broadcom chipsets are supported. So, the whole drivers would need to be, you won't be able to just add device IDs somewhere for them, sorry. rollo
Thanks Cyrana. After getting through the various posts on the topic I came to the same conclusion. Just for fun I thought I'd give your broadcom AppleAirPort2 fix a try just to see if any info was generated. The kext loads fine, but no addition error messages come up and the card remains inactive, as does the built-in wireless on my Vaio. But keep up the great work! It's so nice to be back to unix after a few years!
