I'm looking for a card for Final Cut, AE and Photoshop work; no games.

Newegg has this for $100: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133246

I'd love to get a 5750, but lack of drivers nixes that idea.

Is the 9800GTX+ good enough for me at $100? Would a 250 be worth $30 more? Or, would I be better served spending more and get a 260 or 4870?

Do any of these cards have major problems with 10.6.2?

Thanks,

Herb

Hi, I have EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 MB and it worked ok (Photoshop, Final Cut, some games, etc.) till 10.6.1 but since upgraded to 10.6.2 the card is non more supported neither with Graphics Enabler in PC_EFI v10.5 nor with EFI Strings or Injectors Kexts (I only have 1024X768 and no QE/CI) ;) .

I hope next Netkas PC_EFI or Chameleon releases could fix this issue...

So if you stay with 10.6.1 everything will work ok.

If someone got any solution, tips are wellcome! :)

I'm not sure about the 9800GTX+ but I'm running my Hack with an ATI 4870 1 GB with 10.6.2 and It runs great. My post with my specs is here

brokenjack,

So you went with the dual DVI instead of the the Vapor that has an HDMI... Those are getting a little hard to find. How's the heat?

Thanks,

Herb

Leader86,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I hope you can get it fixed. Kinda nixes the 9800GTX+ for now.

Damn I wish there were drivers for the 5700s.

The 9800GTX+ works in 10.6.2. Problems people are having with it (and other cards) seem to stem from using an HDMI connection and/or using an outdated injector method.

There are a couple of workarounds listed in this thread. Personally, I think the best way to get this working is with a properly patched and compiled DSDT file. I avoided learning it myself for some time, but now with a proper DSDT file I find everything just works with the least amount of fuss.

And by the way, the 9800GTX+ works great for Final Cut Studio, Photoshop, etc. I use mine every day for those apps.

No, don't pay more for the 250. A GTS 250 and a new 9800GTX+ are the same card with different packaging & possibly a change in heatsink/fan design depending on vendor. We're talking about the same GPU core produced using the same 55nm manufacturing, same reference memory amount & speed, clock & shader speeds, outputs, etc...

Really, the new GTS 250s should be cheaper than the old 9800GTX+ simply because of increased availability & sales, but it does depend on what vendor & where you buy.

I don't know enough about how those apps handle a GPU to be able to tell you if its worth it from a cost/performance standpoint.

Both are nice cards.

The 260 is Nvidia's entry level of their new high end lineup. New GPU core, definitely a step up in performance, but also in cost. At most 10-15% higher performance under ideal circumstances (gaming)

In contrast, the 250 is based around 2 year old GPU tech. Which sounds bad... but really isn't when its 2 year old predecessor was introduced at +$350 and its $100-$125 now and includes more RAM & a 55nm die shrink.
