Hey

I am using Leopard Kalyway on a p5w dh deluxe motherboard

I recently updated from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 using these steps

  1. Download the 10.5.2 Combo Update (search Google) 343MB

  2. Go to /System/Library/Extensions/
  3. Start Update
  4. When AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext apperars, move it to trash immediatly
  5. The install finishes, but do NOT click the restartbutton!
  6. Go to /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/ and open the file 1 with a texteditor
if you can’t access the folder
    • rightclick > Get Info
    • at the bottom of the window it says Sharing & Permission, unlock it and click the plusbutton
    • Select your Username, press Select and change your permissions to read & write

[*]Find the string /System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext and replace it with /System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext

[*]Save the file and restart

It worked fine. I tested for a day and there were no problems so I decided to step up to 10.5.3 as the tutorial said it was fine to follow the same steps for the procedure.

Shortly after step number 4 (removing .kext and putting it onto the trash) the mac grey screened and told me I must restart. With no other option I did and now it wont load.

Ive tried to load it in safe mode, I left it loading for 3 hours and it just stayed on the loading screen (white with grey apple logo).

Im pretty new to this game and unsure of what to do. Ive read a few topics that seem to be talking about entering code, but im not too sure where to do this.

Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated, thankyou very much

Ive had the idea of editing the 'Dont Steal Mac OS.Kext' using terminal during the start up options. The only problem is Im not sure how to login.

Ive asked the programme what my username and it says 'johnny' but ive tried my regular password and this isnt working.

I tried amending the file without loging in but it tells me it is read only.

Hopefully im going the right way about this, but I need a hand logging in.

Any suggestions?

Thankyou

it would appear that you didn't delete AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext fast enough, and it got a chance to load - which is what triggered the restart error. Now that the file is there, every time you start up it will crash the OS.

You'll have to remove that file before you can start up cleanly, and the best way to do that would be to boot off an install DVD and (hopefully) you have the option to start Terminal.app from a menu. Once the terminal is up, you can navigate to and remove the offending kext with a command like:

rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext

Then exit the installer to trigger a restart, and cross your fingers.

Many people suggest running a loop in terminal that continually removes this file during updates, as if you're too slow you can get all kinds of problems (as you've discovered!)

Since my last post I have re-installed Kalyway 10.5.2 twice. I didnt get a chance to read your post first unfortunately. Neither install was a clean install as I really want to keep the data I have on my 500g HD

After the first install the computer would boot up and get stuck at a blue screen with the mouse cursor flashing... nothing would happen. I tried it in safe mode and ended up getting to the login screen, which after entering my password would load, then show up again after a few seconds.

I decided to try a reinstall as I thought I may of selected the wrong drivers.

Now I am being presented with a login screen upon loading and everytime I enter my password it loads for a few seconds showing a blue screen then returns back to the login screen. I have tried rebooting several times but the same thing happens.

I then turned back to the forums and found your post. I decided to give the terminal idea a try. I entered the code as you said, nothing seemed to happen but it didnt display any errors it just went to the next line of the code so I assumed that it worked. I then exited the programme and reset the computer to the faced with the same old recuring login screen....

Any help would be much appreciated. Thankyou

Ach. Now it sounds like you've got a borked install. You've got the remnants of the 10.5.3 probably interacting with your twice reinstalled 10.5.2 in all sorts of weird ways. The only thing I think you could do would be to boot off a DVD and manually remove every piece of anything that OS X installs.
