I'm running vmware workstation version 7 under fedora 11 on my MacBook Pro (model 5,1) with 4 gig of ram. I dedicate 2 gig to the guest OS.

I'm wondering which OS would provide the better performance. I have OSX running now, but for some reason, workstation 7 doesn't like the proprietary drivers on f11 and so stated that it will not enable 3d. Anyways OSX is real slow and since I don't own win7 yet, I'm curious as to how that stacks up.

Anyone care to chime in on which OS runs better/faster/stable under workstation 7?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Edit: Looks like Spotlight is indexing the drive which is affecting performance - either way I'm still curious.

Thanks for your reply.

So you're saying that running windows 7 as guest under workstation 7 (on fedora) will be the worst performing of the lot?

I was not expecting that. Maybe, I'll load XP tonight if I have time and see how that performs.

Ubuntu (latest verisons) work really fast on VMware Worstation 7, Windows XP works amazing fast (even better if you optimize it). Windows Vista and Seven work nice (seven is faster), but do not enable Aero because it isn't that fast.

About virtualized Mac OS X, well, it really depends much of your hardware. For eg. I have Core 2 Quad and virtualized Mac OS X works really nice (it's usable but forget it if you plan to use it as replacement for host OS). And ofcourse, use Zenith432's amazing kexts for nicer OS X performance.

Little advice, if you have multiple disks, not partitions, always have VM's on different disk than OS. You gain a lot of performance that way.

At the end, just one thing... VMware Workstation 7 does have better graphic support (for eg. Aero on Vista and Seven works) but still is basic. One of main reasons for that is usage of system RAM memory on host machine as video memory in virtual machine. So VMware doesn't actually use RAM on your graphic card. I'm really not glad about it but what can you do : /

Cheers ; )
