I have a MacBook pro and am trying to play some music videos I had downloaded in the .m2v container format. VLC plays them back and reports them properly as mpgv (video) and a52 (ac3 / audio).

The problem is I want to be able to import these into my music video section of FrontRow so they need to work in quicktime player. I have installed the Xvid, avi importer and ac3 intel components and .avi DivX movies I have downloaded w/ ac3 audio play back fine. Videos in .m2v do not though. I also have the quicktime pro mpeg2 codec installed since I use DVD studio pro.

I think the reason this is is because the ac3 component is meant to be used with the .avi importer i think. I say this only because when I removed the importer, the video would still play in .avi files but the audio disapeared even though the ac3 codec was still there.

All the files I'm using are the ones from here http://n.ethz.ch/student/naegelic/download/

I am aware of the a52 component project, but that seems to only be a coreaudio plugin and does not work with Quicktime Player.

Does any one have .m2v w/ ac3 working in Quicktime on an Intel Mac?

The problem here is that Quicktime has always been really arsey about what it will and wont play. If its not strictly compliant to the official definition of what streams should be used in a container file, it wont have it. I had this problem trying to play certain things too.

First thing i would try is changing that extension from m2v to mpg. The m2v extension means MPEG 2 Video, and as far as i know, shouldnt strictly speaking have audio muxed in. If that don't do it... then i think you're going to have trouble i'm afraid. On the plus side, there are alternatives to FrontRow that might work...
