HP Envy 15" Fails any OSX install! Help.

My recovery partition is now on external drive. You Cant MBR MULTIBOOT with all those partitions:

So the last 3 partitions are on an external drive now.

I installed it successfully with SL Hazard 10.6.2 and Chameleon RC 3, but unfortunately it won't boot at all. I'm going to try another way ... like only installing 10.6 with the Hazard disc and see what happens. If nothing, I'll try what Ayusate did above (EFI 10.6, etc.). I'll report back any findings (as well as what options I selected under "Customize").

 

Update: I just tried it again ... didn't work. Here is what the screen shows after the bios:

These were the following options I picked using Hazard 10.6.2 SL:

I'm thinking I missed one or two of the correct options and was a little iffy about picking the "ElliotForceLegacyRTC" option. Anyone got any thoughts on how to proceed? I'm thinking of trying the Snow Leopard Retail DVD with Boot132(?) and Chemeleon RC 5 method ... anyone else tried that? I just want to get past that boot error first.

 

Also, I'm running an Envy 15-1067nr: i7-720QM, 6 GB Ram, 1080p, ATI 4830.

I've been fooling with it all day ... I was able to get one thing to almost work, but it hangs at "system uptime" after I insert the Snow Leopard DVD into the external drive. That EFI was "Empire EFI for Intel Core i7 and Intel X58 Chipset" by aschar (specifically for ATI drivers). All the other disks I used end up getting an EBIOS timeout error. The kinds of commands that I used:

 

cpus=1 busratio=12 (or 17, both seemed to work up until the hang) -v -x -f

or

-[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] cpus=1 busratio=12 -v -x -f

 

I got the idea to use busratio=12 because there was a thread I found somewhere that had dvX Quad Editions running hackintosh (here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=215033), they are running similiar hardware, so I thought, why not? I will continue to try this method as I think there is promise.

 

As for bringing kexts outside of Hazard, I think we can only do that after we have a successful installation and bootup. Ayusete used the Hazard CD, which the both of us have used and successfully installed. I think the next step though is to worry about the EFI. I was repartitioning on my Ubuntu Live USB and noticed that the Hazard installation left 300 MB partition in front of the OS X partition. That EFI partition, and not the full OS X one, had a boot flag on it ... so the problems we are having are perhaps due to that partition. So obviously, either the Chameleon RC3 (with PC EFI v 10.5) is not going to work for us, or we will have to use it and then install something else after the installation. I'm thinking maybe we need to insert the PC EFI v 10.6 "boot" file into this partition somehow ... or into the /usr/standalone/i386 folder. However, I've been having trouble "seeing" the proper files (boot0, boot1h, etc) there when I move to command line in the OS X terminal on the Hazard CD, but I can see them just fine in Linux.

Since my last post, I've made some amazing progress ... I installed SL Hazard, and only checked Update to 10.6.1 and Update to 10.6.2 combo. I popped in the Empire EFI CD for X58 and ATI and then booted the hard disk from there (using: cpus=1 busratio=12 -v). Guess what? It actually booted ... but only to a point. I am now getting an error that says "Still waiting for root device" after running across an error in the VoodooHD kexts on the Empire EFI. I tried booting in single-user mode (-s rd=disk#s#) but it didn't do anything differently. Also, I actually tried booting with [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] + PC EFI 10.6, but it didn't boot at all (regardless of boot flags) ... for that method, I suspect that I would have to insert the proper kexts that Ayusete used.

Also, I think that sound might work on the Envy as long as one uses the newest VoodooHD kext (that is, if we can actually get this to fully boot!), I saw some other HPs that had IDT sound drivers that worked with it. And there is good news coming from the Wi-Fi front as well, it appears that Project Camphor, as I understand it, has been porting Intel drivers from BSD and should be done in late June (if he is on-time).

Maybe by this time tomorrow, I should have a booted OS X!

 

As for your partitioning troubles stanley, I think you can actually enable/disable the Envy IOS through the BIOS. Honestly, I wiped out my hard disk the instant I got this computer and reinstalled a "vanilla" Windows 7, only taking the drivers I needed from this site: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-drivers...y-15-intel.html. I didn't really like the IOS, and I can obtain all the relevant software I need from Google, etc. Plus, I typically dual-boot between Windows and Linux (either Ubuntu or Arch Linux), so I always just start my computers "new". But yes, you can only have 4 primary partitions on your hard disk, if you are using the MBR method, so what you have to do is create 3 primary partitions, and then one Extended partition where you dump the rest of the partitions you need. I usually just use an Ubuntu Live CD, unless I am shrinking the Windows partition, in which case, I use the in-built Windows disk manager.

I suppose most people would want to run it ... I'm running an Arch Linux install that gets me, from power button to usable desktop (Fvwm), in 15 seconds, so that's kind of my "Instant OS". That's a pretty good guide and will be helpful for many people (though I have no use for it as I had to learn all of that a few years ago when I tried out Linux for the first time).

 

Something I thought you might find interesting (if you don't know already) is that Windows 7's Disk Management has a feature to convert a partition into a "Dynamic Disk" (you right click "Computer", then hit Manage, then go to "Disk Management", then right click "Disk 0" and finally select "Convert to Dynamic Disk"). Hope that helps you out a little bit. EDIT: By partition, I meant disk.

 

As for this hackintosh thing, I haven't had any success yet, but I also had relatives come over, so I didn't get to devote any time to trying out Empire EFI on a USB + Retail. I would hope that Ayusete would eventually come back and post a step-by-step guide, I know I wouldn't be the only one to have great appreciation for him . But I suspect that running hackintosh isn't going to be much fun until someone makes ATI Mobility Radeon HD cards usable on OS X, because right now ... not many are. But maybe I'm wrong on that. At least the wireless issues should be manageable in a month or two as that Project Camphor is porting drivers from BSD (I'll donate if it actually works!).

Well, I finally got it to work!!! I used the SL Hazard 10.6.1-10.6.2 Disc. Its odd though, I currently have it installed on an external hard disk and not in the internal one. In order to do this, you have to wipe out the hard disk you plan on using, otherwise there will be absolutely be complications (I recommend cloning your partitions and backing them up to another disk using an Ubuntu Live CD/USB or PartitionMagic or whatever partition editor you feel comfortable using). Here is what you must do:

 

1) Set your boot order to boot from CD first.

 

2) You MUST boot with boot flags, here is what I used: cpus=1 busratio=12 fsb=133 -v

 

3) You MUST set the Mac OS X partition to boot from GPT, DO NOT boot from MBR (which is why I recommend installing it to a different hard disk than your Windows installation).

 

4) Select the following (names may not be exact, but close):

- Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Update Combo

- Chameleon RC3 + PCEFI 10.5

- VoodooHDA 2.52

- Atheros Fix 10.6.2

- ElliotForceLegacyRTC

- SMBIOSResolver

Please note: I'm not sure if all of these are required, but I did get it to work ... so hey, that's something at least. Will update if I feel confident to cut that list farther.

 

5) Now, install it and then reboot into the hard disk that OS X is installed to. If you did it right, the Chameleon screen should pop up. Press TAB and type in: cpus=1 busratio=12 -v

 

6) If all went well, you will finally be in Mac OS X.

 

As for post-installation ... not much is working right now but that is all fixable. Ethernet: Not working ... I will find the appropriate kext

Bluetooth: Working

Touchpad and Keyboard: Working, though no side-scrolling or multitouch

Graphics: Not working ... will try what I can to make it work, but is unlikely too do so, Expose and Spaces have noticeable frame-rate issues

Sound: Not tested yet

Wireless: Not working ... but there might just be drivers here in a month or two (July or August)

 

I will post updates and working kexts on this forum, and InsanelyMac, as I find them. Finally have a working OS X!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

To get the ethernet working, you have to use the Attansic / Atheros L1C for Snow Leopard kext: http://code.google.com/p/iats/

I'm going to assume that your ethernet is an Atheros one ... it is for mine. Still working on graphics though ... urgh ... but at least there is a working OS X going on!

Cools man, sleep is good. By the way, I was able to get full 1920x1080 resolution ... use the OSX86Tools and click "Add EFI Strings/Boot Flags" and type in "1920x1080x32@60" (without the "'s) into the Graphics Mode option.

That's really bizarre ... I always have to type in "cpus=1 busratio=12", otherwise I cannot boot at all. I'm currently trying to use the method provided in the following link to active all eight threads (all four cores), hopefully this works ... http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=215033. In theory, it should work because it fixes some issues that are specific to the HP Insyde BIOS, which the Envy uses too. That, and the dv7t and dv8t quad editions both come, standard, with an i7-720QM processor (and could upgrade to an i7-820QM, like what you have). I should note that you have to upgrade through the Software Update to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 in order to try this method out. May be worth a look if you can't get all your processors running. I'll report back when I've tried this out.
