Thanks for reading.

I built a new gaming rig with an Intel Core I7-860, 8 GB of DDR3 and an Intel generation 2 SSD on an Asus Maximus Gene III motherboard. After happily enjoying a few games I decided I wanted to install Snow Leopard. Am I terminally screwed? I've tried numerous methods to install SL and they pretty much all end at "Starting Darwin X86_64" and then the PC restarting, some earlier. I'm using every known KEXT(DSMOS, Disabler, etc) and I rolled my own DSDT from a Linux build I have on the PC.

I'm willing to post any files to help explain my dilemma.

I'm in the same situation. Running Maximus III Gene with Intel i7 860, 4 GB DDR3, an old 7600 GS graphics card and some Samsung harddiscs (250GB and 400GB).

I followed the lifehacker guide to install Snow Leopard but I have not got it working yet. Chameleon shows up just fine but pretty immediately when trying to boot the Snow Leopard USB installation disc the PC reboots. I have tried changing some settings in the BIOS without any luck. Next step would be to experiment with KEXT and stuff but I have no idea where to start :/

We should really sue Steve that our hackintoshes don't work :D No, really, I would love to have a genuine mac but they simply don't have a suitable machine to use for combined gaming, video editing and Home Theatre. I don't want two computers under my TV!

Let me know if you get yours up and running. Anyone else out there?

Hi, guys!

I have ASUS MAXIMUS GENE III and I run SnowLeopard.

This board is very close to P7P55D and main part of drivers you can found in topics devoted this board.

For main Install I use instructions from tonymacx86's (Link)! Thanks him for his work!

I don't use his DSDT.aml file. My system work good without DSDT, but I will generate it in any case later.

Now my SL cannot sleep, but it will be resolved in nearest time.

I can upload all needed files to rapidshare.

Thanks for the reply PEgor and very nice to hear you have got Snow Leopard running with this board!

I did try tonymacx86's guide to create the USB installation stick and it did indeed boot up!!! So that's great news, I did however need to remove the DSDT.aml file or otherwise I did get kernel panic. I have not had time to go through the full installation yet but I will post here as soon as I have time to do that.

But this really sounds promising!! Many thanks for the tip!

So I finally got Snow Leopard running!!!

I ran into many problems on the way but now I'm sort-of happily running 10.6.0 on my Hackintosh. I mostly used tonymacx86's guide(with a few things from the lifehacker guide) to install Snow Leopard on my i7 machine.

Here is my story:

1. Setup the installation USB stick like in tonymacx86's guide (Qoopz voodoo kernel the important thing here and no DSDT.aml)

2. Run the installer and first format the disk using "Disk utility", this similar to lifehackers guide

3. Start a default install

4. At the end of the installation I got "Install failed ... the installer could not start up the computer from the disk..."

5. After a few tries I ignored this warning and moved along (as it turns out the install seems fine)

6. Here I could not follow tonymacx86's guide as I did not have an existing install I could access the installation disk from.

7. Instead I opened the terminal while still in the installer (at the warning message)

8. I copied the Qoopz kernel and the extra folder from the USB install stick to the installation disk.

9. Rebooting with the USB stick still plugged in to get to chameleon bootloader and made sure the newly created installation was booted (hitting some keys while chameleon starts as tonymacx86 or someone else put the timeout to 1 sec)

10. Finally got into Snow Leopard for the first time

11. I did go ahead and installed chameleon to the installation disk and installed the Realtek ethernet kext and NVEnabler.kext

12. I installed the 10.6.2 update as in tonymacx86's guide, rebooted and got kernel panic...

13. Swearing a bit and after a while found out that I could get it to work by either removing NVEnabler and loose graphic acceleration or run in 32 bit mode using the -x32 flag

14. After trying to use 10.6.2 32bit a bit I found out that all kinds of applications crashed all the time(System preferences, Disk utility...)

15. Swearing a bit more and re-installed 10.6.0 and skipped the upgrade

16. Having problem getting audio to work until I realized it's good to have the speakers connected to the correct line-out port, silly me :/ I've installed the VoodooHDA.kext right now and it works for me.

17. All apps running smoothly and no crashes

18. UNTIL I installed iMovie 09 and started what I wanted to do with my Hackintosh

19. iMovie works fine as such but when importing AVCHD from camera or camera archive it crashes immediately

20. Found out that others have the same problem, it got solved for pre-snow leopard releases but I have not yet seen a solution for snow leopard.

21. Will try to get this problem sorted out

So I'm sort of happy with this. In worst case I'll use my Win7 install to convert my movies to quicktime format (or using another mac app for the same thing) before working with them in iMovie. I have no other problems with the current install except that the TV is a bit too far away from the sofa to be able to see what I'm writing.

I have the maximus gene III card. And I tried following tonys guide and pretty sure I did everything correct. But it still does not want to boot off the Install Disk. It ends up in a message saying I have to reboot and select proper Boot Device.

I assume you are meaning you don't get the USB installation stick to boot... I would suggest you finger around with some BIOS boot and USB settings. I don't remember exactly which settings I used but I got it booting after a few tries.

Yeah but how long do you wait? I have been waiting for it for over 5 minutes. How long is it supposed to stand like that?

For me, not long at all. A few seconds at the most. You could try to disable firewire in the BIOS, although I would guess it's some other problem as that's no problem for me.

Do you have anything plugged in the firewire port?

What other hardware do you have? Graphics card?

I finally got the installation booting. I think the whole PCEFI didn't work or somehow screwed it up. So basically i followed Tonys guide, but using Chameleon 2 RC3. Works smoothly. :censored2:

Sorry, did not see your last post before :censored2: Happy Hackintoshing!

Thanks! :(

But any ideas on how to get the sound working? I've tried several different kexts. None of them work.

And also my graphics card isnt properly recognized. I have an ATI 4890.

I have a Geforce 7600 GS that got recognized out-of-the-box so I have not tried any ATI card but I'm sure there are other people that have them running properly as well.

But about the sound... Oh yes the sound, I have the weirdest thing with that. At first I thought I was using wrong output ports as I sometimes got audio and sometimes not but that was not true. The problem seems to be that I also have a Windows 7 install that I use sometimes... and I would imagine you do the same thing with that hardware :P

Every time I use windows 7 does the audio drivers configure the audio hardware somehow that makes it incompatible with the Hackintosh drivers, this even though the computer is turned off in between. The solution is to completely turn off the power (pull the cord) between windows 7 boot and Mac OS/X boot to make sure the hardware gets resetted. Then it works perfectly for me  I'm not aware if there is some other way around this or not...

btw. I'm using the VoodooHDA kext right now but I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary as I installed it before I knew what the problem was...

I appreciate your help. I tried to boot to windows and check the sound. There it works. Then I shut it down and unplug the power cable, and boot back up to OS X. But still no sound. I did all this after installing VodooHDA. :/ i Don't get it ;) Building a hackintosh isn't easy I guess

Btw, what exactly is the dsdtd.aml? Think that has anything to do with all this not working? Cause I never installed a custom dsdt as all the guides says, I was adviced not to.

Do you see any output from VoodooHDA at startup (for me there's quite a lot various debug output) and do you see the speaker in the OS X menu bar (and have the audio settings under system preferences)? Also which version of VoodooHDA do you use? I think I'm using the 0.2.1 beta from the google code project.

Actually I'm quite new with all this hackintosh stuff myself so I'm not sure what the DSDT.aml file is, only thing I know is that the supplied DSDT.aml by tonymacx86 did not work for me and running without it seems to be ok. Building a Hackintosh was harder than I thought too and I was about to give up until PEgor pointed me at tonymacx86's guide.

Anyhow, you should be able to get audio working if you try to match my install as we have the same audio hardware; OS X 10.6.0 with Qoopz Voodoo Kernel, boot and Extra folder from tonymacx86's bundle but not the DSDT.aml and then the VoodooHDA kext (hmm, or did I also remove some kext file... maybe the AppleHDA.kext... can't remember exactly anymore).

Sorry for my english,

I have Asus Maximus III Formula and ATI 5850 graphic card, follow instruction in post #3,

but, when trying to boot the Snow Leopard USB installation disc the PC crash very fast,

when I boot with -x installation go 1 -2 minutes and PC crash again.

Where I wrong.

  • 3 weeks later...

I prepared a DSDT.aml for ASUS MAXIMUS III GENE. For this board I use fakesmc.kext and IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext in /E/E, VoodooHDA.kext(Snow 252) and RealtekR1000SL.kext in /S/L/E.

I have a problem with waking up, but I think it depends with my video card, because only monitor don't wake up.

Hey guys.

I just built a gaming rig with the Asus Maximus III Gene board and am attempting to install Snow Leopard. Using tonymac's guide, I have the USB drive set up, and have configured the BIOS as stated, but when attempting to boot off the USB drive get stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor.

What am I doing wrong?

Is it the PC EFI that is messing up or did I not change the BIOS correctly. Any ideas?

Hello @,

I've installed SL 6.2 on my ASUS GENE III.

I can reach the desktop without any problem.

My BIG Problem is that i'm not able to make the sound card working (build in sound card - Creative SupremeFX X-Fi). Neither my Sapphire HD4890. I've tried a couple of differents kext; lots of crash, lots of reboot. No solution.

I'm desesparate to make it working one day :( Really..

At the moment, I've installed VoodooHDA for the sound. What is strange is that the speaker in the task bar is ON (Black) and I can set the volume; but no sound from my speakers... :)

I don't understand... I've tried VoodooHDA, Taruga V3 & V4, AZALIA drivers,...

The other major problem is my Sapphire HD4890... I've tryed also lots of solution as ATI.ROM (from the .bin of my own one), update boot, try different kext from Exotic package. Everything crash... everytime I have to reboot with "-x" and remove kext which make my computer crashing...

Thank you if you can help me... Any advice is very very welcome.

Sorry for my poor english.

Regards,

Try reinstalling VoodooHDA. Seems like a simple fix but it worked for me.

What bootloader do you use?

Actually I just recently had this problem, and it seems the only way to fix it is by turning the switch on my power supply to off and unplugging the power chord between booting from OS X and 7 (as mentioned earlier in this thread, silly me). Anyway If I don't do this the audio in each system will not work.

Weird.

Anyone figured out a fix for this?

Hello Gaerout,

I wonder if I'm using the right VoodooHDA. Which version do you use?

To install it, is this procedure correct:

Drag and drop kext into "KextHelper B7" and hit run.

Then, repair permission of "Extensions" folder by dragging it into KextUtility.

Thank you,

PS: My bootloader is Chameleon RC 10.5 (I hope that you talking about that)

For me both version 0.2.1 and 0.2.2 worked, but 0.2.2 doesn't list all the 5.1 inputs. (audio shows up as 'Unknown'

So try both and figure out which one you like better. I can PM you 0.2.2 if you need it.

And yes that is the correct way to install.

Perhaps this will help too. I find that when I boot into my Windows 7 drive and then boot into Snow Leopard, the audio will not work unless I shut the computer down and unplug the power supply in between Win 7 and Snow Leopard boots. Don't know why this is, or if its only a Windows 7 problem but it wouldn't hurt to try.
