When you added VoodooHDA did you delete AppleHDA in addition? That worked for my ALC272. Be sure to backup the kext before removing and repair permissions before restarting :-).

The same happens with my ALC890. The sound is increadibly bad.

So I am stuck with no sound right now.

Try the attached kext - let me know if this gives you better results. Be sure to remove VoodooHDA as well. Repair permissions, etc..

Im using m2a-vm too, and im having the same issue. AppleAzalia work but it has only output. VoodooHDA seems to work but I get very distorted and noisy sound. I notice that when I mouse over the dock, move a window or use Exposé, Spaces the sound becomes normal, then it gets noisy again. So I guess it has something to do with Power Manager or Windows Manager, maybe ?

Somebody pls help us.
